I recently bought a DX2547 and have a question about it's modulation. I may use a little pro audio jargon but bear with me as I will try to explain it as best as possible. When I key and talk the mod meter reads 100% for a moment and drops back down to say 60% during the entire key. Almost like a compressor which has a really low attack time and long release time. Working in corporate radio I have been involved in Volume Wars and don't think 60% modulation is doing me justice. My question is what in this radio is holding it back? If I increase the modulation will I risk overshooting the moment I key up then going back down to where I want to be? Or is the limiter set at 100% and the mod can be turned up to squeeze me in there? Better yet is there something wrong with the radio? I want to get into it but I only want to go once, I need to get a faster freq counter to do the allignment and unlock the clarifier, I will do that soon. I am just gathering details for when I go in. Any other owners notice this? What did you do? Thanks for your time! Chad |

highly unlikely meter is showing accurate modulation percentage, need a scope, or take it to someone with one. what kind of audio reports do you get from it? go to someone elses qth, or go mobile & have someone talk & you listen to it. that should give you an idea if it's right or not, then you can go from there. |

Chad,I would go with Pzz's recommendation and put it on a scope for an accurate reading.meters just give you a relitive reading and never tell the whole story.I have several radios with mod meters built in including a 2547 and never use the mod function. |

I have talked on radio's before and when the audio limiter/resistor still was in line, I've seen the needle back off a little when i've modulated. did a couple of radio's and snipped the audio limiter and that took care of it. |

the radios come from the factory set for 100% modulation. the modulation meter -only- reads accurate modulation levels in high power mode and with a tone used for modulation, not voice.

You don't want to cut modulation limiter because it will make it muffled on ssb. You can put a 1000 ohm resistor in series with the emitter leg of Q39 transistor and it will open up your modulation. Semper Fi!!! Unit199-Harve |

I heard of the 1K on the emitter trick, I will definately do that before cutting (if needed) I will get it on a scope soon, I'm going to do the whole tune up. It is rather off from the factory freq wise. Thanks for all your help everyone. I'll let you know how it comes out! Chad |
