Pat, VR13 maybe? When I owned my 959 I could never get anyone to notice a difference in audio when adjusting the alc. I always use noise cancel mics like the Astatic 636. I tried a Road King 56 mic on it and that did make a noticeable improvement in loudness over the Astatic. Man I sure did a lot of stuff to that radio! Hitting about 20 watts believe it or not! kenny cef491 |

Sounds good, I have a k40 mic, but have to attempt to wire it for the galaxy, a good radio but I don't think its in the department for a good receive for ssb it does the job. My Uniden pc122xl its super for ssb barely touch the clarifier and the 142gtl is super for receive also. revpo/doctor/CEF795 |

You know the Galaxy 959 is really a nice radio and so super easy to mod the heck out of it, perfect for the beginner wanting to learn some mod skills or what is actually involved in working on a radio in general. I really loved that radio and regret,...really really regret selling it to someone who was only interested in cb for a moment. Oh so nice sounding on AM, no complaints but Revpo like your saying it was lacking in the SSB mode. I mean it worked fine but for a seasoned SSB operator it was just no where near satisfying. Recieve audio sounded distant and sensitivity a bit weak. Audio output was low and had many negative SSB radio checks from off freq to just sounding out of whack or that disgusting warble I can't stand. Now on AM that thing rocked! Super loud and CLEAN! No need for a power mic especially with an amp inline. The AM recieve was pretty good but not perfect. The noise blanker was like a miracle. During heavy static the radio just whispered and at night I wondered if it was on. Thats a little annoying to me because I like to hear a little background static. I was always wondering if I was not copying those very distant stations you can hardley hear. Bottom line for the price, easy mod capabilities and all the features you can't beat it. A really fun radio! kenny cef491 |

hmmm, I get nothing but flowers on my dx-959 on ssb or am. True the ssb is off freq on ssb and needs to be tweaked. I made a great contact with the 959 in the mobile, running a KL-60 amp- to a guy in Queensland. He told me i was on 28.3854 Mhz. lol Never the less he tuned to me and we made the contact. People say that the stock mic sounds louder than my RK56. Also the stock mic swings the radio better on SSB with less relay chatter on the amp. All i've done to it is turn up the mod limiter, adj am and SSB power. + Channels upper and lower. |

In my opinion, there is too much emphasis placed on being right on frequency. I have talked to many operators that claim they are on frequency, but you have to move clarifier to get them on frequency. I always figure if I can understand what they are saying, I can always clarify them in if I feel it is necessary. Enjoy the contact and do not worry about whether you are right on frequency or not. Well I adjusted the alc a few weeks ago, it is 3/4 of the way open now, and went back on the stock mic, and as one said it is easier to understand than the amplified mic, and getting gud reports on it after I adjusted the ALC, and a number of dx contacts on it. I am actually enjoying ssb more than am anymore, seems the band is open a few times a day and I get some good dx rolling in. While on the subject of ALC, I did the same on the pc122xl adjusted the alc at 3/4 and have received fine reports on it also. I turn one or the other radios on about 20 mins to 30 mins during the day and they have settled down to frequency or close to it with no complaints or problems... 73 revpo/doctor/CEF 795 waving a hand from the cornfields of INDIANA |
