I cannot remember the ham frequencies to listen to on hams taking care of business during a hurricane. Florida, Georgia, SC, NC and potentially all the way up the east coast could get a visit from Hurricane Irene.

Do a google search of your local area and you will have more frequencies than you can listen to in a life time. |

This is one of those times when I so highly recommend that everyone have or get a receiver that will cover the common SW bands.
The info exchanged over the amateur and coast guard hurricane nets is priceless and timely. The info on the broadcast news is so sensationalized, it is difficult to endure.
Antenna requirements are minimal for shortwave listening. You can just string a longwire to a nearby tree or building, you can connect your rain gutters, just about any metal will work. If you want to get real sophisticated, you can use an HF ham radio antenna cut for a specific band or bands. But, a simple wire antenna is all that is needed for 99% of successful SW listening.
Pick up a general coverage receiver and make it part of your shack, you won't be sorry.
