I currently have an Antron 99 in a box ready to be used, my radio is a RCI-2990 and right now i'm just talking on 11 meter +/-40, and sideband a lot also. Im going to get my license to use 10 and 12 meter soon, is this a good antenna to use or is there a better one, also how much coax do I need to get the swr's right? thanks Doboy-426

Doboy,

that one is highly debateable. Many think that Jay in the Mojave has one of the best, it just cost more. Maybe the techs, Jay, Marconi, or a better antenna guru than I can answer if it can be tuned for all three bands (cover all 3 bands simotaneously) maintaining acceptable SWR's, or if you will need an antenna tuner to make that happen . That may be simple enough.

However, your A99 should be able to be tuned to cover the 10 & 11 meter band fairly well and will possibly get acceptable SWR's on either end. I don't think you'll cover 12 meters with it. You might need a tuner there as well to have either extremes of the 10-11M bands without high SWR's, but maybe not.

Use the shortest length possible of coax and don't sweat set measurements. Do yourself a favor and use good quality coax and amphenol connectors.

Doboy,

If you want to use an A-99 on 12 meters you will need to make the top section a little longer, electrically. I would try a 102" whip or one like an 8 ft. Francis Amazer. The top section of the antron is not a quarter wave, it is shorter.

The problem with this is you probably won't be able to tune it for 11 meters (or 10).

What about the Penetrator 500 made by HyGain??? I have heard very good comments on the maco 5/8 too!! Antron 99 is a very good antenna but if you run power, you might want to stick it on a 200 ft tower(kidding) because the bleedover is enough to drive you insane from the neighbors!! LOL!!!!!!

I agree with 307. I tried a bunch and seems to be the best all around cb antenna.

I have the sigma 4, sigma 5/8 (alot like the maco 5/8 in many ways) and the HY gain P 500. all great antennas but try to find one in good shape! LOL! Jay does make a great new omni but 250.00 is wayyyyy out of my league and alot of other peoples too. Maybe when they are more out there and he comes down on the price ill get one...

RE DB

Perhaps I read your post incorrectly? The tech plus 5 wpm will get you on 10 meters true. But to use 12 meters you will need the General Class license or higher. Which is no big deal because the G license study material is not that difficult to learn.

So when you go to take your tests ask to take the tech and general written if you want to use 12 M.
