A guy in town told me if I was going to use more than 4 watts on the Imax I would need to tune the amp with the antenna. In other words, if I tuned the Imax to 10 meters just using the radios power, he says I'd have to retune the antenna if I used an amp of 100 watts or so. What is your experience? Does the swr go up a lot on your Imax when you kick in the power? |

I have answered my own question. I got my Imax up on a test pole and the swr is about the same with 7 watts as it is with 100 watts. It might be up just a little but not bad. I'm impressed.

I have NEVER had to re-tune our IMAX when using 4 watts or 1000 watts or more.

Hey I'm thinking of installing a (cb)system in my car("98"buick lesabre)I was thinking of going with the 148 gtl and the kl-300. and a radio shack(antenna) fiberglass stick I was wondering if you think this would interfere with any thing on my car as far as the altnater and anything else for that matter the amps on the alt. is at 140 factory will this setup work for me please I need you help.......thank's |

It could interfere. Use rg 8x for coax and form a choke at the antenna. Be sure the antenna is grounded. Try the Kl-200, the one with pre-amp it will give you plenty of audio and the pre-amp can be turned off. I find the kl-300 too strong for my 10 meter rig in my Cavaliar!

I'd worry about RF interfering or damaging computers or sensors. Your local Buick dealer should be able to provide you with any information concerning running HF radios in that particular model.
The amperage requirement should easily be met by the alternator as long as you don't have every accessory in the car turned on while you're using the radio.
Mikefromms - Amplifiers don't give audio - they amplify and hopefully linearly. There are some amateur amps that do RF processing, but there are no CB amps I've ever seen that do. |

I've had my electronic shifter shut clean off when running just 150 watts. The warning lights would come on and ABS light would come on. I assume rf was running stray throughout the car. I drive my amp with very low watts not so as to not put out too much rf. I grounded my antenna and have a choke formed at the antenna connection.

I want to thank racer x for the info. on seeing a dealer before installing anything on the my 98 buick.....and I also would like to thank mikefro-mms on the tip's of what I could use in my car...hey mike would using a power mike be a good idea if I di want audio and is every thing al ready to go. |

The powermike would push the amp even more. I took mine off because it pushed the ssb on the amp to the point where the lights on the dash flashed again! |

You've got a nice setup going, don't ruin it with a crappy ant. Go with the Wilson 1000. You will notice a tremendous improvement in tx and rx over the Rat Shack ant.

I have a trunk mount Wilson 1000 myself. Run a wire from the mount to the body of the car. Roll 6 turn of 6 to 8 inches of the coax sidebyside and tape it for a choke.

COAX-COAX-COAX-gotta run GOOD quality, well shielded coax. my davemade swings 800+ w/almost 300 bird watts dead key into a MAGNET MOUNT. this particular 3-5" magnet mount uses a standard type ball mount with an SO239 connector on the bottom. nothing is permanently installed yet, either. and i am experiencing NO flashing idiot lites, no windshield wipers waving with every key, or ANY interference to the stereo! til i figure a way to get 9913 from mag mount to amp without any holes, i'll continue to use this super rg8x (MINI 8!) with the awesome braid coverage, which is allowing my '99 durango to run trouble free! sorry, guys, but wilson 2k trucker on non-modifiable mag mount and 1-2290 transistor wreaked havoc on my ride. astatic 3kl & that GREAT coax get my recommendation!
as for asking dealer rf questions, i tried...hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! |

If the dealer doesn't know anything about permitted RF levels, then they can contact the manufacturer for that information. Granted that they won't know the maximum wattage that you can run without causing problems, but they can tell you what levels have been tested and approved for useage within the warranty. The ARRL questioned all of the automobile manufacturers several years ago and they have the information on their website.

When I purchased my VW in 2000 I refused to sign anything until I got RF information about the vehicle. The sales manager thought I was a bit odd, but as I didn't get nasty about it and they wanted to make the sale, I got the information that I had asked about. They didn't even know what I was talking about and I had to tell them what to ask. They first contacted the service department and they didn't have any idea, but when they contacted Volkswagen USA they knew exactly what I was asking about, they faxed the dealership a document with all of the information I had asked about (HF,VHF, and UHF allowed wattages for warranty purposes - VW is awesome in their testing - love that German engineering!) and I agreed to the sale.
