Is 2 watts low enough input to run a KLV-250 on high for regular use? Also, is 10 watts input low enough to run the KLV-250 on high for normal usage? The manual claims you can run up to 8 watts on am to drive it and up to 18 or 20 SSB. I know that is too much for any lengthy keydowns. But would 2 watts am and 10 watt SSB with amp on high be safe? The reason I ask is I have a kl-200p that works great with low input on high and looking for similar results. mikefromms |

I think the 8 watts drive they are referring to is the peak envelope power, not carrier. Since a 2 watt carrier modulated at 100% should produce 8 watts PEP, it makes sense to me. I would run it at whatever gives you 40 to 50 watts carrier from the amp on high. That will most likely be between 1.5 and 2.5 watts radio carrier. That should be fine as long as you don't get too long winded. Keep an eye on the temperature. I haven't had any problems with mine, I put 1 watt carrier into it and that gives me a 30 watt carrier out of the amp on high. Nice and clean 100 watts PEP is all I ever need. I put about 10-12 pep into it on SSB, and average a little over a hundred, hunded and a quarter out. It'll certainly do more than that with more drive, but I baby my amps, and they run cool and clean. |

Thanks for the response. It is doing great on low and running very cool. The preamp is a great addition as well. I'm 10-8. mikefromms |

It should do well on both 10 and 11 meters. Find the amp on this site or run a search on klv 250 and the information about the transistor types should be found. It is a nice clean amp. Mikefromms |

I think it uses the RM-3 transistors, same as in the KL40, 60, and 203 models. |

I use 2 1/2 watts input to my amp, I also use a 12 volt fan attached to the top of the amp to keep it nice and cool. The type for a computer power supply works best. This also helps performance, as on my transistorized (non tube) amp the output does degrade as it gets hotter. Just wire the fan into a twelve volt DC input, and put a cut off switch in line if you dont want it running all the time........ Lee |

I know the kl 200 is one 1446 final, the 300 has 2. I thought the 250 was a base tube amp, if it's transistor it might have two 1446's. If it's the 2 pill then dead key 2 watts into it, any more and it will run hot and shorten the life of the amp. |

i'm planing on getting a klv-250 myself but i read that it put out 140 watts rms on am and 240 watts rms on ssb.i don't know what rms means but i thought it ment steady or carrier power.so if that's not right just how much does it put out with 3 watts input? Bluegrass KCD-40219 Louisville,KY. |

Bluegrass, WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM! Below is the Info on the KL-250 for you and it shows you what you can expect. I would personally suggest using no more than 2 or 2 1/2 watts to drive it and it will last forever. W90-00085 KLV-250 Base * $ 169.99 FEATURES: Frequency: HF Mhz Supply: 110/220V Output Power: 120W Max Output Power SSB: 240W Max Mode AM/FM/SSB/CW Input Power: 1-4W Input Power SSB: 2-20w Fuse: 2A 26db Hi-Low Power Level Hope this helps. Those catalog numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt. I own one, I ought to know. All amp specs are usually VERY optimistic. If you drive that amp hard enough to see 240 watts out of it, it is going to sound like poop, get way too hot, and probably not last very long. |

beat me to it highlander. i always tell my 'customers' to count on at least 100 watts LESS than what the name implies, or even less than that. then there won't be any surprises. |

If you have a good high amp power supply, it could pay you to go mobile amp. BTW, my klv-250 is much more swr matched running it on low. I can drive it with 4 watts and it really doesn't heat up that much. Strange, my kl-300p matches out better on high. Great 10 meter amps! mikefromms |

no i don't have a high amp power supply and running on low is not something i plan to do often i'm going to keep it in med or high power most of the time. |

The KLV-350 is a loud amp. A friend of mine runs one all the time around here and he is one of the loudest stations around. Good luck with you choice. Mikefromms |

Bluegrass, hey man, I have a KLV 350. Before my a99 crashed to the ground it was a MONSTER. I could easily talk anywhere I could hear. Just be sure it's in a spot that is well vented so it doesn't get hot. And DONT OVERDRIVE IT! But yeah, I could get out all over the place with it, and everyone said I sounded awesome. |

i still think i'll get a klv-400 it's only a few dollers more then the 350 and with it i'll get an extra 50 watts. |
