I currently have a $20 102" stainless steel whip on my truck and I'm thinking of upgrading to the $90.00 Wilson 5000 "trucker" instead. I have been reading online that this antenna is great compared to other competitive antennas ie. monkey-made, etc. but I haven't seen this antenna compared to your good-old-fashioned 102" 1/4 wave whip!! Any thoughts on which one would perform better?? CUrrently I have a communication range of about 30 miles with my mobile setup (with 102" whip). I'm running a Galaxy DX-959 with an old Palomar TX100 Bi-linear amp. Thanks!

The 102" whip is what all other antennas are measured against. You already have the best mobile antenna available unless you would want to go to an 18' 1/2 wave antenna. The Wilson antennas are excellent for what they are, but they aren't better than a full 1/4 wave whip.

I switched from a Wilson 1000 mag mount to a 102" SS whip and I couldn't believe the difference it made. I can't recommend the 102" whip highly enough.

Having used both, I returned to the 102" whip, that said -you want a quality mount.

The Wilson 5000 is in no way shape or form an "upgrade" from the 102" SS whip.

In reality, it amounts to not much more than a (shortened) 102" whip with a coil added to it to make up for the loss of the whip-length that has been taken away from it.

When compared to other coil loaded 1/4 wave antennas, the Wilson definately is one of the better antennaa on the market. But for 90 bucks?? Not on your life.....they're not that good! That's a lot more than most mobile Ham antennas.

The only reason for using an antenna other than a 102" whip would be for reduced size. A 102 will handle more power and have a better signal than ANY loaded (shortened) whip. Repeat, ANY loaded whip. Nuff said?

What would be the best way to mount a 102" SS whip on a pick up truck? On a conversion van?

Depends on where you are mounting it. If it's on the roof you can use of the the simple hole mounts with a spring for flexibility. If you mount it on the side you'd want to use a ball mount and spring.

I installed mine on the roof of my car with a ball mount and spring so I could tilt the antenna down if I needed to go under something that was low in clearance. I kept the allen wrench in the pocket of the driver door so it was easy to take tilt it down and up when necessary. You can also just use a clip to hold the antenna down for clearance, but I liked being able to tilt it.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED!! I was originally thinking that the Wilson 5000 would "perform" better on at highway speeds because my 102" whip bends back quite a bit doing 65MPH. Do you think the rigidness of the 5000 will help in this situation?

Let me re-phrase that...

Where is the best location to mount a 102" SS whip? Taking into account reflection and directional issues. Where should I mount a 102" SS whip in order to get the maximum performance?
-------------------------------

Ideally, right in the center of your roof if heigth isn't a factor.

It doesn't really matter that the antenna tilts back, but if it's a lot you may want to buy a stronger whip. I got mine at that radio store in every mall in the USA and it seems to be pretty sturdy. It tapers from the base to the tip.

If you do a lot of highway driving you can do what the drivers do with their antennas - tilt it forward a bit. It'll still bend back but it'll be pretty upright.

Then there are always the fiberglass whips - they don't bend much at all. You've got to use a spring with those or they'll break when you hit something low hanging.

Funny story about when I tried a 102" fiberglass whip to see if it was better than the SS whip. I mounted one right on the ball in the middle of my car's roof and without a spring. At around 38MPH it would whine so loud I couldn't stand it! It varied with humidity which I though was pretty cool. When it was so humid that it would happen in the mid 30's, driving down a road with a 35MPH speed limit was just punishing! I would be talking to someone on the radio and they would think it was some kind of siren near me. I added the spring and it ate up the vibration, but I went back to the SS whip because it was easier to deal with tree limbs and telephone wires.

I run a Wilson 5000 magnet mount on top of my beat up, rusted, pontiac sunbird and ill say this much, best mobile antenna ive owned! I had a 102" whip and i had trouble with it from the get go.. It got out but it just whipped around too much foe my liking so i repalced it with a wilson 1000. just last month i gave my 10+ year old W 1000 to my fiance and bought a gently used 5000 for 50.00 with new mini 8 coax.. Got my swrs under a 1.3=1 and have had nothing but ++++++ reports.. In fact most guys and even my fiance all have told me i went up 1 to 2 S units over my W 1000. Dunno why but i belive them! All i know is ive had several mobile antennas over the years and the Wilson 1000 and 5000 are very decent antennas...

Gumball,

Well with the 1st Sargant and I we have well over a Million miles of OTR Driving and I can remember only seeing two whips on Big Trucks, one was on a Car Hauler and it did not get out worth a hoot and the other one on the front bumper of a NEWBIE DRIVER that wondered why his whip seemed very directional and he could not hear very far behind him. (The darn thing was bent back to his drivers door steps going down the road.)

OOPS forgot about Gators S-10, hehe

No offense here but 102" whips tend to be VERY DIRECTIONAL and give VERY POOR PERFORMANCE when you mount them on a BIG Truck hauling 80.000 lbs rolling down the highway.

Your Tractor and Box Van or Reefer or Flat bed trailer and headache rack can block about 1/2 of the signal or more.

If it is mounted to the bumper 66 & 2/3 of the Whip is Blocked by your tractor and trailer

And as DOT limit's the height to 13' 6" there just is NO GOOD PLACE to mount a whip on a Big Truck.

They may work great on 4 wheeler's and 4 wheel trucks but they just were not designed for 18 wheeler use when hauling a trailer that blocks / limit's the signal.

Hi Team,
The 102" will bash with more overhanging objects, take out more parking lot lamps,is more visible so you will find your wheels quicker in a parking lot and if you are a Dxer it has more bandwidth,in the order of 2 Mhz.The Wilson may only have 750khz band width but it is a lower profile antenna so will not attract as much attention while you are driving or parked up.Both require sturdy mounting systems yet the Wilson requires more care as the mount is a SO 239 type and has no tilt over facility.Hope this is of help to you and the best of DX.

now...i know what you are saying about the 102 out performing "any" loaded whip, but im here to say it aint so...so to speak...i was running a wilson 1000 roofmounted on my ford ranger...the coil fried on me so i had to replace it, figurd id just slap a good ol' 102 on the tool box. That was a mistake, alum... boxes make a terible grounding situation, so i tried everything to get my numbers down (they where up around 2.5) changed coax and mount and ran ground straps, so dont tell me to do those things...lol...im no idiot. moved the 102 to the drverside back corner inside the bed mounted on the bedrail with all the proper supports. still had higher numbers than i wanted (1.9-2.2 to 1)
trimming the whip made it worse, adding more whip made it worse. I was pissed....
I had a wilson 5000 trucker with the 10" shaft laying around so i put it on the mount that the 102 was on...CHANGED NOTHING ELSE...same coax/mount/radio...EVERYTHING. Its tuned down to 1.2 all over the band now and out hearing and transmitting that 102 no matter how you look at it...to say the least i was flabberghasted...but it just goes to show that you cant go by the books on ant's....every situation is different and will cause different performance, in my case the W 5000 trucker is head and shoulders over the 102

and thats how the cookie crumbles...lol

THE wilson antenna mounted in the center of your car roof will outperform the 102" whip IF THE 102" whip is mounted on your bumper.

You can't beat a 102" whip mounted on a vehicles' roof.

but the two ants where in the same place...same mount...the wilson out did the 102 in my case...but i agree with the bit about not outperforming a 102 on the roof...sorta...you can outperform the 102 on the roof...i know a guy with a suburban who has TWO half waves (18 footers) on his roof

I run a 102" steel whip attached to the aluminum tool box on my Tacoma with a Hustler stainless steel ball mount and spring.

Now the trick is, I have the aluminum tool box grounded to the bed of the truck, and have all vehicle panels (including the bed) grounded to the frame. I use 2" copper straps for most of the grounding.

I did all of this to improve 75 meter performance from my bug-catcher antenna. However, It has also really helped my cb signal. Trust me, proper grounding is necessary in order to allow any antenna that you use to work properly.

I can see why folks might need a low profile antenna, but the 102" whip works for me.

All a loading coil is good for is shortening an antenna physically. Well, they also produce a good deal of heat if you hit them with enough watts...

I can see the point about not using a 102" whip on big rigs, though. It would need to be mounted in the center of the rig to be somewhat omnidirectional.

The double mirror-mounted antennas that most truckers use make a nice egg-shaped rf lobe in front of and behind the rig- exactly where these truckers want to talk...

I all so have my 102 mounted on aluminum tool box.My SWR is 1.3 on Ch,1 an 1.1 on Ch 40 I did run a ground wire to the frame to the mounting ring of the ballmount less noise an better ears then my wilson 5000.

Capt Hook... Measure side to side of the roof to find center.. Divide vehicle length(in feet) by 2 and thats the spot to drill.
thats how my 102 whip is on my chev blazer.

Capt_hook,

You can Weld or Bolt a piece of steel to the Bottom side of your Bumper or Frame that will allow the antenna to clear the body and mount it so that you can still use your tail gate.

Many hams do this to mount different antennas on Both sides of the rear bumper, and some even mount antennas on a slide in hitch ball mount if you have a trailer hitch mount.

Hope this helps,

Roof mount!!!!! only way to go.. ;)Oh and if you do mount it on the side, watch out that a cross-wind doesn't blow the whip over into the lane along side of you when you're on the big road. lol .I had my 102 whip mounted on the drivers side behind the cab on a mazda pick up, When i was on the big road i heard a driver sayin, "watchout for this 4 wheelers antenna, it's blowin into the hammer lane" I looked and show enuff it was right near smacking the mirror on this big truck that was tryin to pass me.. LOL I guess the big spring is a little weak on my set up..

Using Firestick on rear bumper of Wrangler, decent preformance considering not much above roof. Tried a 102" whip on spring, same setup otherwise as Firestick and SWR doubled to 2.75. What's the problem? I always thought big whip was THE answer.

watch those tree branches and drive thru's. You know what is STRONG.. 10 inch camping plates. the tin plates that have that blue coating on them. Tough piece of metal and already shaped to be a big washer. (Army Surplus, Walmart)I havent tried it because i don't really mind the little bit of flex but if you want to reinforce it a little , theres an idea. How do you like them ears on that whip? I love my roof mount!
I also had a roof mount 102 whip on a old Pinto years ago. It looked like a big remote controlled car.. lol

The SS 102" whip is a great antenna but the Wilson 5000 has it beat for this reason......the best place by far for a mobile antenna is on the roof, and I'm sure anyone that's been around the block would agree. Most users would never put a steel whip on the roof so they put it on a tool box or bumper or mount it to the truck bed in some other fashion. The Wilson 5000 roof mount matches in great and is good for even the most flimsy roofs. Because the 5000 is easily mounted on the roof it'll match or outperform the steel whip. My Wilson 5000 drill through mount outperforms the steel whip I had mounted on my tool box by 1/4 of an S-unit and that is good old 1st hand knowledge. I run an Xforce 600 straight 6 pill into it for going on 3 years and never had any problem

Try this sometime: Have a person check your
SWR on the 102" whip while moving at 65-70
miles an hour sometime. You will be amazed
how much the SWR increases and how much power
your losing. Sitting still works great...LOL

Capt-

As far as the roof flex goes there is a good solution that is rather cheap too, take an old saw blade from a Skil saw enlarge the hole slap it on the bottom side of the hole drop your Gum drop mounth through and put the washer and nut on the bottom of the blade to hold it tight against the roof and wham no more roof flex. Only problem with this way is that you are pretty much limited to a gum drop style mount. But it does work great and when I have done it I have seen a SWR as low as 1.1 to 1 and with out it I couldnt get the SWR below 1.5 to 1. Hope this helps.

I have a big ol heavy 6 foot silverload wilson on my trunk with cowl mount, beehive gumball you know. I prefer the top load antennas and to me are the better performing. Had to use a 4x4 piece of sheet metal with the mount for stabilty. Not to many like the huge antennas but I dont care what people say!!! I GET OUT and thats all that matters. Too many truck drivers have been astonished about the big ugly whip on my 4 wheeler and when I reply they say "oh ok I understand now" 73 cef 491 beep beep

Have a Ford F-350 4 door. Used a Wilson 5000 centered on the roof. Oustanding performance, 1.1 SWR's. Dog chewed through the co-ax on vacation so I picked up a 102" whip at a truck stop and mounted it with no spring directly to an "L" bracket mounted to the bed just behind the cab on the drivers side by the trucks previous owner where he had a 27" antenna. SWR's went up to 1.75 but the performance increased noticably. Height was about the same. Never had a problem with the Wilson 5000 and would use it and recomend it in a heartbeat but the 102" whip works better for me in MY particular situation. I think each situation is unique. If you can make the 102" work for you, you will be pleased! Never needed a spring, it hit the cab when I tried one and I tuck the antenna under the cover if I need to drive through somewhere. I got rid of the dog. :-)

to drop swr on your whip make and attach a "zing ring" just above your roof or ground.
adjust until swrs are flat
there realy easy to make.
all you need is 2' to 3' of wire and a hose clamp.
copper used to sell them.
works like the tri star..
nothing beats a whip.
the trucker came close in our recent test.
add the spring if you want to go down in frequency, like 12 meters or move the zing ring.
i like that sound when the whip hits stuff.

I second that Dale! The Predator is the next best thing from a 102 inch SS whip.73

i would rather have a 102" running 130 MPH than a Wilson 5000 ! LOL you mite have to hit the brakes realy fast to grab the 5000 ! LOL
just cause it bends dont mean its not doing its job !

but if the antenna isnt on the car or truck its not going to do any good ! LOL

Hope it helps !

I have a Wilson 1000 as well as a 102" stainless steel whip. I bought the ROOF MOUNT Wilson first, but always wondered about the S/S Whip. Well I conducted a blind test. I contacted a friend of mine 10 miles away. told him to hold on a minute. Without him knowing (HECK HE DIDN'T EVEN NOW I HAD THE WHIP) I switched the antennas SAME COAX AND MOUNTING LOCATION (I HAVE AN ADAPTER THAT CONERTS THE SO239 type mount to accept a standard antenna. GUESS WHAT THE RESULTS WERE. He had a 6 on me with the Wilson 1000 and a 6 on me with the Whip. I think the 102" wip is gaudy and just too tall. My Wilson hits enough as is. For the Lack of performance gain. And the fact that the Wilson will Hit less overhead obstacles. I CHOOSE WILSON

Ground the coax shield to the rack then down to cab, chassis, bed. Mine has an swr of about 1.5 @ 26300, drops to nothing through the entire 27 band and back up to around 1.5 @ 28500!.
I could never get any Wilson's or coil antenna's to be as Broadbanded and there's no substitution for height.

I use the Wilson 5000 trucker, it's bolted to an SGC QMS-37 and I get 160-6m coverage, just the same as the K40 and the nine foot 11 metre 1/4 wl top of a Shakespere ABS, they all deliver the goods. However, on 11 metres the 1/4 wl is clearly superior to both the Wilson and K40, getting out and pulling in. There's no getting past square inverse law, all those exaggerated DB, DBd and DBi claims are fuel for a flight of wishful thinking!
