Why is it that if you take two export rigs,(I say export meaning galaxy and using these cause it's what I mess with most), and do the exact same tune to them, clip this and remove this, add that, they show different readings and improvements? I have taken two 44's and set both up alike, yet they show different PEP swing readings? I can't seem to get the weaker of the two to do the same as the other. Or why is it that two radios of the same make/model, one will sound different, usually louder or clearer, when you have moded them the same way? Same mic and all that jazz, what gives?

Therealporkchop,

Diferent batches of components, different production lines and times, different ages of components and radios and different times of actual use on a radio can all be a factor.

As well as components that have been removed or replaced.

Unless you have the proper equipment which very few people have such as: a Signal Generator and a good Scope along with good accurate SWR/WATT meters, good dummy load and good test equipment and volt/ohm meter as well as experience in using the equipment, you will often find there will still be a difference in readings.

Always do all of your testing into a dummy load and use the same jumper that is attached to the dummy load and re-calibrate all of your meters and equipment to each radio before starting.

Just because a tuning pot is set the Exact same in two radios that are alike and everything looks to be set them same does not always mean that both pots or parts in the radios are performing the same.

Unless you have purchased both radios brand new and take them out of the box yourself, you have No idea what has been done, replaced or tried or adjusted before or what has been attacked by the Famous Golden Screwdriver before.

When clipping a radio that means you are generally defeating the Modulation Limiter and in doing such you are at the mercy of a radio that is not operating as it was designed to operate.

Just my nickels worth.

Yeah, true. I am using the B&K 1040/2040 and 1801(I believe) freq counter. I have another brand new counter also I am using. I am also running a B&K scope. I'm picking the modulation off the coax with a T coupled with about 10pf of capacitance. Also have a URM freq generator, EICO VTVM, digital ac/dc volt/ohm meter. A fairly accurate watt/swr/modulation meters, and a dummy load.

I hadn't thought about what had been done before I got there or age either. But I have tried it on two radios I got new and opened the box myself for the first time. Still had the same problem, but I see where you are coming from.

Guess I should start another topic for this and call it "DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW"....

What makes some meters swing alot backwards and forwards, like not really moving when you key the radio and then peggin' it out when you talk. Doesn't seem to matter what I do some radios will and some won't yet I see the modulation on my external meter? Anyone know a trick to make the radio meter swing like crazy? I just want to see alot of movement. Some guys ask for this from time to time, I don't really see what it matters. But I try to help my friends out what I can.

Man its the same as if you were to take two exact car brand new with the exacts same miles on them put on the exact same modification parts tires suspension ext, same weight reduction same wheels everything the exact same, one of the cars will dyno at more horsepower than the other no matter what you do, alot of it has to do with the fact that the littlest thing right down to the amount of grease in the rearend can make the gears just a hair tighter and cause more horsepower reading than the other car. point is no matter how alike two things are there is always something different no matter the size of the difference.........

porkchop, if you just want to make the needle on the radio go crazy, turn up the VR for the TX meter. if the radio has any swing to it whatsoever, the needle will slam to the right when they talk.
i dont see the point of this either, but if that's what they're paying for...
it doesnt do anything but wear out the meter a lot faster.
guess you didnt have much luck convincing them that their meter movement doesnt really matter eh?

No, you know how it is. Some guys just like to watch that needle swing. Don't know how they do that and drive, but oh well!

i am of the same belief system when it comes to modding other peoples gear. "i'll do whatever you want. your money looks the same as the guys with good sounding radios."
