i am having trouble getting amplifier to work , i have tried 2 amps texas star, and kp300, my truck will not run while using amps, i have amps hooked directly to battery, both positive and ground, also have a body ground wire on it, running a wilson 5000 mounted on the roof, 200 watts is max without having trouble, i think its 120 amp alternator, the truck has ac, the truck will not run while using it on high drive, need help.

This might sound silly, but put amp in diff.vehicle and park very close to your truck and key it, with the truck running if the engine dies it's the computer,if not then it's the alt.and it may be alot smaller than you think at least half what you stated.Bigbob

It's not the amp drawdown on the battery, it's the amp affecting the vehicle computer.

Do some searches on shielding the computer or talk to Tech671. He may have all the answers.

I've heard of wrapping the computer in aluminum foil, but I have never tried this so I would do my homework before taking this advice at face value. Even I do not trust it without personal experience, or those that have had success with the same problem or vehicle.

some dodge vehicles are weird electrically. we put wig-wags(circuit that makes the highbeam headlights of a vehicle flash in an alternating pattern) in a game warden's durango one time and it screwed the computer up(abs light stayed on and all kinds of other crazy stuff). the brake lights would not work at all. we got a schem from the dealership of the electrical wiring. it showed a relay that we just knew we had blown. we never could find the relay and neither could the dealership mechanics. when they 'read' the on board computer it was showing that their was a number mismatch(basically saying it was stolen). they reset the computer and it worked fine for a while. all but the brake lights, we had to manually rewire it since the relay was never found(they told us this was fine and would not void the warranty since they could not find the relay either). this all happened again later with the game warden and the wig-wags had to be removed. about a month later with the next batch of wig-wags that we ordered, there was a note in the box saying not to install on durangos.

my point is that if wig-wags can screw up the computer in a dodge, just imagine what your amps are doing. it really sounds to me like the rf from the amps is getting back into the dodges computer.

I have a 94 dodge dakota, and I have run 1500 watts out of it without a problem. Its an extended cab, I dont know if yours is. I ran the radio equipment direct hot to the battery, ground to the vehicle. The amp was in the back floor of the truck, and never a problem, I ran all kinds of amps in this truck, palomar, x- force, boomer, and am presently running a Dave's made. With the big homade amp, I ran an extra battery (deep cycle), but never a problem with the computer, ever. And the antenna I used was a number of different magnet mounts, big coil one, wilson 1000, wilson 5000. Mounted dead center of roof.

Try grounding the - post of the battery to the frame. Biggest problem with vehicles is poor ground. A ground from factory from batt - to block or fender doesn't cut it with radio amplifiers.
