Maco made a 500, don't think they made it very long. It was not as 'big' as the 300 in output, and more of a modulator type. The Maco 300 was 7 tubes, 2 driving 5. The 500 was a 5 tube, 1 driving 4. Like in all their amps, they mostly used 8950 and 2057 tubes in the 500, although some came with 6 volt tubes like the 6LB6. They soon came out with the Super 300, same tube setup as the 500, 1 driving 4, but with the big transformer, and much stronger than the 500, they are capable of 1KW pep. |

Maco made a 100 base amp also, did you ever see one of them. It was their first, looked more like an old gas bathroom heater than an amplifier, thats what everyone called them. I have the schematics on the Maco 500, and most all of the Macos. I went to the Maco plant in Memphis several times in the 1970s, watched them being built, and bought several 300s right off the line. The Maco 300 was the best and most popular of the bunch. The 750 was the worst of the bunch, although some of them were very strong, I've seen a few that would flat dead key 1000 watts, and that was on an accurate meter. Not talking about that 'swing' thing, but the old big ass-kicking keydown carrier. |

yeah,i have seen maco 100 before.i just came across a kris amp 1 6jg6 driving 2 6lq6 built in fan.someone took the keying transisters out cause one of them wer bad.i am going to take it to someone to fix it.it will sit and idle but it wont key, tubes are good 70% everything else in it looks great.maco 500 must have not been a very good amp, cause i have never seen one.i had a 300 it would do 1200watts the drivers i replaced them with 2057's. |

Those old Kris amps are good ones. I have one now, its a four tuber, one driving 3, however its in the shop right now, it has a keying problem I couldn't find. It runs 6LQ6s also. You can still find them pretty easy. I've talked to some guys that have been using a cheaper tube in some amps that run the 6LQ6. Its a 6JF6, and new ones just cost about 10 bucks. I'm sure they want do as many watts as the 6LQ6, as they are just a single element tube. But for the difference in price, I could stand a little less keyup. That first 100 watts is what makes the big difference anyway. |

jyd, that old Kris of mine will load up to about 300 watts, the way I drove it, I don't ever put over 2 watts keyup into these old amps, or the transistor types either. Back in the old days, we would drive them with 5-6-8 watts, whatever your radio would do, and peak to the maximum. We later found that was not the best method, especially with the price of tubes now. All that I've listened to sounds better with low key, maybe about half what they are capable of, and let the forward swing do the rest. One exception is the old tube radios, like the Brownings, will sound ok, and not overheat the amps even if they have a 5-6 watt keyup, but then too, they don't have that 30 watt swing like the exports. Some of these meters will not show if you are swinging forward or backward, everything shows forward. If you get a RMS meter to go forward, you know you have good forward swing. scrapiron |

I looked thur my schematics, the only Kris I have is for the Boomer. It didn't have those transisters. Like I said, mine is in the shop, but I will pick it up in the next day or so. If you don't find the information, I will look in it and send later. |

JYD: If they are about the diameter of a pencil eraser, they are most likley 2n2905's. If they are smaller than that, they are most likley ecg 123a's. bullshipper 537 Tex. |

JYD, I looked at this schematic again for the Kris Boomer, its the little 100 watt box, it runs 2-6JU6s. It does have two transitors, Q1 and Q2. Q1 is a 2N3702. Q2 is a 2N3567. They may be different for the larger amps. I'll see whats in mine when I get a change to pick it up. |

I've had several 300 maco's some come with 2 transformers seven tubes 8950 . These tubes hard to find if you can find them.I bought a new 500 in the 80's had nothing BUT PROBLEMS. The five hundred had one transformer & five 2057 tubes. the 500 did not filter right & did over heat. I have a 300 maco I use now with a few mods I get around 1100 peak watts on a astatic meter driving it with 2watt dead key swinging 90 |

Skywalker975, Any used radio equipment be it amps, radios or antennas is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. You can always check the internet auction sites for a guideline on what some people are willing to pay for an item. Lon ~ Tech808 ~ N9CEF CEF#808 ~ CEF HAM#33 ~ CVC#002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

if it needs tubes or repairs, you could be saying-OUCH! it originally used 2-6lb6's & 5-8950's. IF you can find 'em, the 6lb6's are going for about $30 each, & i've seen 8950's approach $90-EACH. there were plenty of substitutions used over the years that are a bit cheaper. |
