Hey guys, I thought you might be interested to know that I just got my I-10K from Jay in the Mojave last Friday (4/19/02). I got busy and did not have time to tweak it until yesterday. I used the settings right out of the box and it was close enough for government work for sure. I was impressed and show the extra effort that Jay put into this one. It showed to be a bit on the high side of 11 meters for the settings I used from the docs, but was very close and made good bandwidth. I set it using high side noted for 27-28 mHz. I later used Jays formulas to set it at 27.385 and it was dead nut on the mark, again I was impressed. His tuner is very nice to work with.
This one is somewhat similar to the old Hygain Penetrator. The big exception is the lower loss tunable feed system Jay has designed for this one.
After assembly and checking the measurements, I mounted the I-10K on my tower at 30' where I had my old original Sigma IV antenna installed. So far the local signals I am recording are 1-3, S-units, better than I had recorded from the Sigma, just like Jay claims. I re-installed my Sigma on my test pole setup and raised it up to 25' in order to compare it, on air, with the new one from Jay. The new one betters all reports to stations that I have been able to check and shows better results than most of my recorded signal reports taken in the several weeks prior to receiving the new one from Jay.
The big deal you will find with this antenna is that it is very sturdy, well built, goes together very easily, and is a breeze to tune. You guys are going to love this one. Every part is machined very well, all machined parts are de-burred, and the insert ends of each tube has been chamfered and dressed for ease of assembly into the next section of tubing. BTW, all hardware is Stainless Steel and Jay uses star-lock washer attached to the nuts for secure attachments, plus he supplies jam nuts for all those small, but vital, connections that tend to work loose in the wind.
You may find it a little pricee, but it is going to be a real success I predict. The low-loss tuning device Jay has designed is also very responsive. His documentation produces exactly the results expected, so you guys that here-to-fore have run plug & play stuff are going to love it also and be able to have an all metal 5/8's wave antenna.
Give Jay call a ask him to send you his sales kit, you too will be impressed.

Hey 833, it was back in April that we discussed Jay's I-10K antenna. You requested one for testing. It has been 4 months and we have heard nothing. Can you give us an update?

Hi Marconi.
I received the 10K, assembled it, and was finally able to take it to the antenna test range. It is on its way back to Jay right now and I am writing the text. Look for a report soon. |

I received my antenna from Jay in the Mojave this past week.
I was anxious to see for myself what all the fuss was about.
NOTE; I am vision and hearing impaired.
My wife read the inclosed instructions and helped with reading the tape etc. When all was said and done as per the dimensions given and a 70' coax hooked from antenna to radio the SWR was 1:1 without any tuning. I have a temporary mast that puts the base of the antenna at 36' from ground.
The construction is first quality and works better than advertised.
When I get the new pole in the ground the base will be 45' from ground.
I run 214 signal coax and 213 coax for the mast ground. The ground is attached to the antenna base and goes to a truck radiator that is buried 2' below ground level. The shack equipment is connected to seperate 8' ground rods. |

Oh Ironmask....I am Soooooooooooooooooo jealous! Let us know how others are receiving you compared to before and anything else you can think of. I sure am anxious to read Tech883's report.

Hello All:
Ironmask asked me to look this thread up on the Copper Board. Thank you for all for your kind words.
And I know Tech 883 has tested the I-10K, and is writting a reort of somekind.
I have a Spam Filter on at my Server, and have had other people say that None Spam e-mail messages where not getting thru. I have called the Server and had them turn off the Spam Filter.
I have been pretty busy putting to gether a Yagi Beam Antenna, Called the Crusader "Fiver" a 5 element Yagi of course. Please excuse any delays or missing e-mail reply's.

How can you compare two antennas fairly if one is 35 feet and the other 40 feet? Just wondering.

Jays antenna looks like a hopped up copy of the old dipmat that mosley made in the 60's 70's I had one up for almost 30 years and im looking in to restoring it. Mine suvived 30 years of floridas sun and salt and still worked when i took it down. I know antennas can cost dearly even if you build them your self and his is pricy but i would not rule it out if your thinking of something that might LAST. As far as gain it should be about the same as any other 5/8 wave MADE CORRECTLY. |

To answer a few questions!
The telephone pole is in the ground as a tower for my I 10K antenna. The base of the antenna is 45' above ground level.
There is a #4 solid copper wire from antenna base to a 10' ground rod that goes thru the center of a large diesel engine radiator that is buried 2' below ground level. The copper wire is brazed to the radiator as well as the ground rod. There are 4 20' #4 solid copper wires that run from the base of the pole in four directions outward from the pole. They are all buried 2' below ground level. at the end of each radial is an 8' ground rod.
With this set up I have no problem with local as well as long distant DX.
I am using a VR 9000 as my base. For the amount of time and money spent I feel I am far ahead of the game.
I took down an I-Max 2000 w/GPK and replaced it with this antenna. The results were gratifying.
I hope this might clear some things up. |
