Hello,
I am new to radio and just won a RCI 2980 radio from Ebay. Could you guys tell me what you think of this radio. I got it for $300. Is that a good price? It is in like new condition and only used for 2 months. Also, I would like to turn the dead key down from 2 watts to 1/2 a watt to drive a new amp that I will receive later. How can I turn the key down?
Thanks,
Bill

The 2980 is the same radio as the old Galaxy Saturn. For my opinion, I like them better than the new version saturns. It has a variable RF(power) on the front panel, if it doesn't turn down low enough, take the top off and adjust VR 13 down to the low key you want.

Bill,
The 2980 is a very good radio. There are only a couple of things I dont like.Well, I guess I should say, I would change in the radio. The first is the freq. counter, it is only a 5 digit counter. It would be nice if it had a 6 digit. The echo cannot be changed without opening up the radio and adjusting the vr on the echo board.Other than those 2 things I really like the radio.I am not a big echomax 2000 fan, but the 2980 sounds really good with one of these on it.I do however prefer the D104 on any radio. If the echo is set to your liking then I would recomend the D104.Do yourself a favor, since you are new to all of this, get some good coax with a high shield rating and a good antenna.Any radio operator will tell you the antenna is the most important part of your system.I would also recomend for a good antenna, if your not worried about spending a little extra, the Imax 2000 or maco 5/8 wave groung plane.Or if you are on a tight budget a very good antenna is the Antron99.But if you have close neighbors I would stay awat from that one.It will bleed over on TVs and phones very much.So I would go with the 5/8 wave.A better antenna anyway. As far as the price that you paid, Its not too bad. That would be what I would expect to pay for a used 2980.As long as It has not been tinkered with too much.Good luck with your new radio. It can be a lot of fun and a great hobby.Dont get addicted to it like I did.It was like a drug.I was looking for ways to get money to buy something else.I would sell things that I regret that I sold.Oh well.Live and learn. If you have any questions about your new hobby , feel free to email me directly or just ask on the forum.I am on it all the time.See ya...BigEd

Thanks for all the info on the radio. I am going to use an old Turner Plus 3 Desk Mic that I am going to get from a friend and he is going to let me use his old Skipper 300 tube amp for some late night fun. Don't want to get my neighbors that mad at me. I am using a RS 1/2 wave antenna (Like the old A-99). I do bleed on them when I use my Galaxy 99 inside. I am using RG-213 coax and a good TVI filter. Does anybody think another antenna will help with the RFI/TVI? I live in a townhouse and my neighbors are very close.
THANKS AGAIN...

no, if you are really close your transmission is overloading on them. but the tv says it must accept a certain amount of interferince. so i guess their tv was designed to accept that amount of interferince!@!!!!

Both of my Skipper 300 amps were bleedover boxes. They sounded fantastic down the road but infuriated my neighbors.

there is a board off to the right of the radio. it is a vertical (standing up board) there is one pot i believe on it that is the one that you turn. take off top cover/ board on right side/ youll see it.
Hey bill youll love the radio. i have mine done up at 2 watts dead key with a nice lil swinger mod with a maco 300 7 tube box (like the skipper). it screams ask florida on channel 26.505 am im always there talking to them. well i have to wait a while burned out my antron 99 with this set up. antrons only handle or seem to 700 max am side if you talk a long time!! have fun.

Thanks for the info on the radio. When I adjusted the echo I was looking around in the radio & I saw that R249 was cut. I know that is the limiter. Should I connect it back or leave it like it is.
Thanks,
Bill

Hello and 73's from Montreal,
I have a RCI 2980 and the frequencies seem to drift once the radio has warmed up, does anyone have a mod to correct this problem, or am I the only one having this frequency swing?
Thanks in advance, Roy

If what you are saying is when you first turn it on it's at 27.205 and after a half hour or so it's at 27.206 then that's normal. Use your coarse clarifier to keep it on until the unit warms and stabilizes.
