at 3000 miles away, can't help you there. BUT, how about bringing a radio & piece of wire? we can surely make up 3000 miles on 20m or 40m! & i'm sure at least a few CEF members would try!

808 sure made a GREAT suggestion....though, highly unlikely us eastcoasters will hear any west coast skip on 10 or 11m. ESPECIALLY end of summer!! midwesterners MIGHT, but better chance of hitting the lottery here on the atlantic ocean!
probably after dark on east coast for 20m, 40 may even be a tougher contact. you name the freqs, best is 14.23-14.27 and between 7.178-7.202 to avoid broadcasters on 40-that & my lowly general license doesn't permit operation below 7.175 or 14.225. FORGET anything above 7.2, it is NASTY here on the east coast after dark.
the only net i really jump in on much is on 7178, sunday nites 9PM local time, i believe.....mainly to grab any 'rare' states.....FWIW

Thank you for that info. Not sure how the bands will behave for me in Sonoma County.I am only there a week so all I can do is give it ago.Are any other frequencies allocated for CEF operations in the 15m,17m,20m 40m and 80m bands?

WILCO!I just hope my traveling portable station will work OK when I get it set up. I will attempt to float between 14.23-14.27 and between 7.178-7.202.How do 80m and 160m behave? Both are very good on this side of the planet for close to medium range contacts.
