Anyone read this book? It has some radio action in it. They Discuss ham and short wave as emergency comunications means, and go into detail about the Cobra 148, the characters all have one installed in their vehicle. They use USB to communicate as they E&E out of the cities when everything colapses. SSB because it is less common, has better range. Good read this book but interesting how it includes some radio action! 392

James Rawles wrote this book. Easy to find on the web. There is a lot more CB and Ham action in the book than I described in my first post. CB is actually the main form of communication after the fall. good read for radio nuts!!

I did read it. Being a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, it was a must-read! I thought it was pretty decent, though the characters seemed a little stiff and ill-defined at times.

No CB action, but some CW/Ham action in the "sequel". The book takes place with mostly different characters during the same time period the first book occured. The title is called "Survivors."

"Patriots" is here: http://www.amazon.com/Patriots-Surviving-James-Wesley-Rawles/dp/156975599X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1339474719&sr=8-3

"Survivors" is here http://www.amazon.com/Survivors-A-Novel-Coming-Collapse/dp/1439172803/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1339474719&sr=8-4

And a personal favorite that I liked better that either of the above is "Lights Out": http://www.amazon.com/Lights-Out-David-Crawford/dp/0615427359/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339474927&sr=1-1

Not much for radio stuff, and the book could have used an editor (lots of typos, etc) but a darn good read.

If a collapse like that really happens radios will be prime high value trading currency. Any communication device that will let you talk farther than you can shout out of window will be highly valued. Unless local law enforcement confiscates all radio devices for their use.

Rawles' books are about an economic "meltdown" that causes essentially a worldwide super-depression. Lawlessness and chaos is everywhere, and rule of law is in short supply. People are hungry because farmers can't buy diesel to plant crops, and truckers can't buy fuel to move the food anyway. Cops quit to take care of their own families, and powerplant workers don't go into work because of crime in the streets, and they aren't getting paid, and even if they did get paid, there's nothing to buy, etc.

That's the scenario. The books are about characters to live through this stuff and try to keep themselves and their friends/family safe.

The first book is like a survival manual in story form. Rawles never says "Jim shouldered his rifle and took aim at the bad guys." Instead, he writes "Jim put the AR-15 M4 clone to his shoulder. The 30 round magazine was loaded with US military m193 55grain 5.56 NATO ammunition. It was lighter than the M855 62grain version, but the M4 used a 1:12 twist rate barrel which would not adequately stabilize the M855."

I don't mean to say it's a snoozer. It's a decent story, but it can be a lot of boring stuff if you are just in the mood for a fun read versus learning how to be a survivalist.

I guess so... I mean, the characters are not superhuman, and everything that's written is not impossible, just varying levels of improbable.

Find a copy and read it yourself...I bet you could pick up a used copy pretty cheap. Then you'll know what I mean!

I keep two deep cycle bateries charged up with a Horrible Freight solar panel kit with my Cobra 148, & my Kenwood HF rig. Also a police scanner & a dual band HT. In case of SHTF, or the electric goes out!
