If you are NOT using an amplifier, what would be the proper way to adjust the output on your radio(AM)??? In the old days I just adjusted the carrier for max, and turned up the modulation..now I keep hearing about the amount of swing that you have, does that only apply if you are using an amp??? Feel free to go into detail..Thanks....

Tom, I don't work AM but I would guess like most things we will use a compromise. Put your carrier at about 2-3 watts and mod to 50-100% wherever it sounds best to a buddy you can trust. Clean is always better than just loud. Loud should come with increased drive. If that sounds trashy then go up on the dead key until it sounds best.

Some buddies that hang out on 27.365 LSB in the Houston area all claim that they have their antennas tuned so that when they modulate their SWR meter reading will either stay the same or it will dip a little. If asked they will say "I key 1.3 SWR and talk flat."

Look at your own meter, with the RF all the way up, and see what happens. If it goes backwards, then you too have a perfectly tuned antenna. What a pip!
