I just got my new Connex 4800 DXL from Copper and I just love the radio.

It was modified/peaked/tuned by Copper and it's performing fantastic, but I have one question:

When I whistle into the Mic, the wattage on my peak-reading meter swings way up. When I talk into the mic, no matter what my mic gain is set at, it'll start to swing forward to about 1/2 of where it goes when I whistle into it and will suddenly just STOP like it's hitting a brick wall.

I'm using an Astatic handheld D-104 amplified mic and don't understand why it's doing this. I've tried every level of mic drive and it does the same thing.

Is there something that still needs to be clipped inside the radio to let it swing like it does when I whistle into it?

My Eagle 2000 deadkeys 4 watts and swings to 25 whether I whistle, or talk into it. I don't see why this radio should be any different.

Help!???

I would, but everybody tells me that my new Connex 4800 DXL sounds "stock" and it isn't "loud" like my Tram, Brownings, Eagle 2000, etc... I'm running a powered D-104 and I just can't get any modulation out of it the way it is right now.

Somebody said I needed to clip the "limiter"......R249?

Anybody?

The fact that you said r-249 makes me think it's board is similar to eagle 2000.You know if you open it up you void warranty, but try turning vr-14 first, mod. trimmer,if it's the same board.BUT and I mean BUT get ahold of 307 any way you can and ask him HE WILL KNOW.

A whistle is about 1.5 Khz , average "Talk" is between 400 to about 750 Hz. In multiples
(1 octive higher) they pass better through the audio input stages of the radio giving massive swing on a meter in the peak mode. Average talk power is usually 1/2 above normal dead key.Leave the limiter in...

307,

Per your advise, I won't have any changes made to the radio.

Any ideas why everyone's telling me my new radio sounds like I'm talking on a "stock mike" and that it's doesn't sound as good as my other radios? Everyone says the audio is "flat".

I've always heard such good things from all the Techs about the Connex 4800, but I can't get any audio out of mine at all....brand new radio....peaked and tuned by Copper.

Appreciate any input you might have.

My best experence with connex and mikes is to use the stock mike and work your mike gain.. I have 3 connexes now and they all have the stock mike even my new 4800dxl-e ,. The 104 mike is great mike , but give me the stock for these radios.. DEAN-

I use a 636L on my 4800DXL/Echo and get good reports from it. Also my stock mike did't sound that bad either.

Are you talking about on A.M? You're running the stock Mike on A.M and it has the best Audio?

I'm trying to use ANY MIKE on A.M and all reports are weak audio.

One guy even told me "it sounds like a 23 channel Kraco with a straight mike".

Bad radio? Ideas?

Sincerely appreciate the input guys.

Have your tried doing the NPC-RC on it? That will make it very loud and very clean.Have you rebias`d your modulation clamp? I think it is tr32.

There are some cool mods you can do to that radio to really make er' get up and scream!!
I traded mine off to a guy in Maine and i had my tech do some mods to the radio and it was loud as hell on AM even with a stock mike!!
Its like any export even a stock Galaxy 88 will sound "soft" when it is not opened up to its full potential.

Thanks Highlander1588!!

Highlander suggested that I open up the radio and find the Main Board Number. Turns out it's an EPT690010Z made by Ranger Corp....same board as in the Galaxy DX2517, Cobra 148F GTL DX+, Ranger TR6900F, etc.

I was able to easily find all kinds of Main Board Modifications on the net and decided to start with the simplest first. I have an Astatic Handheld Mic (D104MC) for this radio, so I went in and turned up VR-16 and what do you know, the RADIO SCREAMS! No more 50% modulation, or the meter looking like I'm "hitting a brick wall"...it swings all the way over....dead keys 3 watts and swings to over 20 on low side, which will drive my Texas Star 667V quite nicely.

Instead of "that radio sounds bad", I'm getting "what the hell are you running....that sounds awesome"!

P.S, Copper owes me a peak & tune.

:)

Thanks guys!
