I have the RCI-2995DX and I am thinking of getting a small amp to help get over the noise. will the Texas Star DX 350HDV work with this radio or will this radio be too much for that little amp. Thanks for any input

the 2995dx can put out 150-200 watts,, you will not gain anything till you increase your power X4, so if your at 200 watts now you need 800 watts for the person on the other end to see a 1 s-unit increase

Fmario22, you would need an amplifier that is designed to function with the pep output of the 2995 radio. Most situation would require you turn down the power output so that you don't exceed 100 watt pep or which ever amplifier you select. There are some amplifiers out there that will handle the 2995. ie. Texas Star 1600, but again be sure you don't exceed the maximum drive recommended by the amplifier. Also, be cautious of amplifiers that say HD or high drive. If you were to use the 2995 on the Texas Star 350, of which is a very nice amplifier, you would damage the unit within a very little time due to the pep output of the 2995. There are some "ham" amplifiers that have even dropped to 50 watts drive over the traditional 100 watts drive max. The Texas Star 1600, not to be confused with the low drive units, but the ts 1600, be sure it is a "sweet sixteen" or the 1200. Be cautious of post that claim an unreasonable drive into amplifiers claiming that they will work. Drive an amplifier with the recommended output and it will serve you well. No one purchases a corvette and then drives it 180 miles an hour everywhere they go, so use the required amout of drive with your amplifier and it will last you a very long time. Don't under estimate the 2995, mine sits directly under my Kenwood and I have made 1000s of dx contacts on the radio alone on an Imax, three into Antarctica. I very good friend of mine says, "you transmit, there for ....you are". Makes me laugh every time.

Thanks Sitm for the detailed response. I had it in my head that just a few more watts was what I needed. Obviously not the case. Funny thing is, I have had no trouble getting out with this radio. I have made dx contacts in England, Ireland, Germany, and just about anywhere I want in the US. The radio is sure a talker. Again Sitm, thanks I appreciate it. All this dx on a Solarcon A99 too. Unreal.

Doubling your power will give you a 3db gain, which is 1/2 of a"S" unit.

Of course a higher gain antenna helps with the receive not just transmit.

I'm not saying this as I'm a Ham or to put CB down. But if you read about Ham radio and Antenna's you will find no matter how much power you are tiring to push out isn't going to take you no where if your antenna isn't good and good grounded as well.
A lot of Hams are QRP (low power)at 5 watts and under, but they have a super tuned antenna and talk everywhere. Yes power can help but remember it's not power alone that makes you heard. Now like I said I'm a Ham and my station runs 100 watts (most HF Radio's are maxed to 100 watts)and a 102" wire (G5RV)antenna. Talking USA 50 states is a very easy for me, DX can be done all day all at ease. Now I know you said CB and doing DX to other country, and that is great but your over working your self on that band (11meter) alone. CB to me has become a local thing only to me and I have not talked on one in near 10 years now. I have to much fun on ham radio to touch a cb again and have been on cb for a very long time, i will now live out my life on ham. I don't have to worry about running 1500 watts if I wanted and be illegal. Who just are you trying to talk to where you would need 350 watts on cb? You really might want to get into Ham and use 100 watts and see just how easy it is to talk cross country and over seas. 73

Isn't it still "2-way radio"? An amplifier will only work for 1/2 the conversation. A better antenna will help both halves of the conversation.

Your money is much better spent on better antennas.

Check out the directional "beam" antennas on the Copper Electronics site. http://www.copper.com/cart/Antennas-Towers/CB-Antennas/Base-CB-Antennas

i agree. if ya wanna improve both local and dx .then i like the maco 103hv get best of both worlds. if ya only wanna improve just local orjust dx then the standard m103 is a great choice.if ya need a small beam the y quad is a good one.coppers do carry other beams like the gizmotchy [some swear by these] and larger beams aswell.
