HI GUYS;
Iwas tuning around the ham bands today and had left the IMAX2000 in line, came on 40 meters and stations were good and loud, now I run the IMAX straight without using the tuner, anyhow I keyed up and the swr showed 1.6, the radio was reading 50 watts not full power of 100, but what do you expect with a 10 meter antenna, gave a call to a op in NORTHERN OHIO, he came right back with a 5/7 no problem on the qso,now I have an antenna a vertical on 40,this IMAX is a bargain...

That's not good, your radio is trying to save it's life by auto cutting the power in haft to 50 watts at 1.6 if you double this to 100 watts your SWR would be reading 3.2 These newer HF Radio will cut the power in haft to save it's self when SWR is over 3.0 This should be telling you something and the more you run your radio this way the more you are warming it to death... better safe then sorry. buy a ham antenna or build one for the freq/band you wanna talk on.

I had an A-99 that I used as a multibander. The tuning rings were frozen so I used channel locks to loosen them. The rings cracked in half so I took them off and tried it. Crazy thing worked with a 1.3 on 10/11/12, 40 worked with a 1.8 which without a tuner wasn't great but tolerable for short use. Sad part, after trying it, I came home one day to slithers of blackened fiberglass all over the yard. A lightning storm took it while I was out of town.

I do not use it anymore on 40, built a 40 meter vertical, and it the radio does a fine job...

thats what i HATE bout these fiberglass antennas.
sure they,ll show ya a low swr on alot of different bands .but doesnt mean its resonant there.2 entirely diffents things . a standard swr meter wont tell ya that

Very true! We all like to stretch it though to see what happens. After all, isn't that what a hobbyist does, research and experiment.
Hey Revpo; tell us about your new antenna. Flat wire? Tubing? Copper wire?

Just took 36 feet of wire, attached to a fiber glass pole I had in sections put a connector on and other laid out 50 feet of insulated wire for a counter poise and it works great on 40, never have tried it on other bands, swr around 1.2 to 1.3.
Total cost around $8 dollars for the insulated wire, minus the tubing, which I had bought years ago.
I will patent it for a production line $130 an antenna...joking....

Sounds like a cool worthwhile project.
I use to make 2m pvc and 300 ohm antennas with a SO239. Then I found the same antennas minus the tubing rolled up in a sandwich bag for cheep at a ham feast. Fun making antennas!!!!!!!!!!!!!
