Hello.
I had a question i was hoping someone could help me out with. I live in Joplin Mo. and our police department operates on a motorola trunking system. They have this one channel they call "coded" or "car to car". when they transmit on this channel, all you here is static or "white noise" every time they key, and the whole time they communicate on this channel. in other words the channel is codded and you cannot listen to the conversation. They can flip a switch and "code" any channel they have that they want to "code", but this "car to car" channel is a dedicated "codded" channel. I was wondering if there is any way to unscramble this conversation to be able to hear it? Maybe some type of box you would need to build? any help you could give me i would be very thankful for. Thanks for your time,
James

Yes there is if you want to risk federal jail time. The decoding of scrambled signals is at best a very gray subject i work for a S.O. and i can tell you with out a doubt if you were coppying our officers and got cought you would be in real big trouble. Part of this is the proprity natuer of the algrithim used in the coding... simply put someone payed big bucks to stop you from hearing them amd expects it to work.

James,

As a police dispatcher, I can tell you this. You probably ain't missing much. We use encrpytped messages in our agency to give out complaints about drug dealers, sex offenses, and other stuff basically to protect the privacy of the caller.

Generally there is not much earth shattering stuff on there. Sometimes it's "Hey officer so and so, call your wife". Sometimes we give out mundane stiff like loud music complaints because the caller knows the person they are snitching on has a scanner.

Most of the good stuff is done by phone before the officers embark on their "mission". Then when they tell us they are arriving at the "pre discussed location" we know where they are and what they are doing.
