I'm a newbie to this forum. I live in White Lake Michigan. I have some old CB radios that either don't work or don't work correctly.
I'm wondering if there is anyone local to me that fixes radios.
I started "cb'ing" back in 1969. My father had a cb base station and a mobile unit. My first mobile unit was an old SBE Cortez with a Big Momma antenna mounted on my deck lid. It worked pretty good in my mind... I dabbled with cb's on and off throughout the years, but not much in the last 20 years.
Anyway now I'm retired and want to do some short traveling and want to have a cb again.
I got a magnet mount antenna and tried some radios I have. Getting radio checks isn't as easy as it used to be. People either don't want to be bothered, are too busy playing with there reverbs and amplifiers or simply cant hear me. I was able to get a few responses like "it's workin" but they don't want to elaborate.
Any way, I don't have anyone else with a cb unit to actually talk with to see if mine are putting out like they should.
I have 5 of them here.
Cobra 21 GTL made in Korea. Seems to work both send and receive but don't know how well.
Midland 100M, Korea, used to work great. Now I can barely hear anything from the speaker. I did hear someone close by say "it is working loud and clear" when asked for a radio check, but was silent after that.
Uniden Pro510XL, China. Receives but doesn't seem to transmit, at least no response to radio checks.
Another Uniden Pro510XL, China, nothing but static on any channel.
Sharp CB-800, Japan. Turns on,light comes on but no noise, no movement of signal meter, seems dead.

Anyone local that wants to see if these work? I want a good working cb for when I do travel but my money tree is pretty bare. I can't just run out and buy another radio. I saw some small things for $38 but doubt they would be any good. Probably like my Unidens that don't work...

welcome to the fourm. ad welcome back to radio.far as radios working or not ,if ya dont have a good
power ,swr ,modulation meter i highly recommend starting there.and theres a variety of them here at cooper. make sure it says it reads both peak and rms.this will tell ya whats transmitting and whats not. now far as recieve you probaly dont have anyone/and or a few locals to give checks.maybe passing truckers. if ya live near a interstate go to 19 other than that scan the channels at different times
make note of what time and channel and if there locals try again next day at exactly same time channel, ect.from your post the cobra 21 seems ya best bet for now. only thing id change is antenna. since ya on a tight budget like me i also recommend a sirio m-400 [starduster ]base antenna and get some rg 213 coax this will greatly improve on radios transmit and recieve. cb techs are far and few these days.
