Recently we received an email from a customer stating that he was "concerned the country is going to collapse and looking for a doomsday type cb radio". He wanted something that would be helpful if "other communication is down".
I thought it might make for an interesting discussion as to what everyone would put in their emergency communication kit. So what would you include in your
Doomsday Radio Kit
and why? |

SOUNDS like one of these prepper stations.
I would put in a Handheld radio for ham bands
one of those handheld for FRS/GMRS, they are a dime a dozen
and a cb inexpensive radio though
a good antenna for cb.
HANDHELD radio would help in communicating with repeaters,ALTHOUGH IT COULD BE TRACED>.
Handheld FRS/GMRS handheld for communication with anyone
and cb for communication with anyone.
Unfortunately all this would be monitored so transmissions would have to be quick and fast.
Also if the country collapses one might want a short wave receiver to listen to some station passing on information on what is happening.
Also extra sets of batteries for each radio and perhaps a hand cranked radio also. I believe they still have the hand cranked GMRS radio also good for a mile or two.

Interesting topic!
A "Doomsday Radio Kit" assumes it is for use when society breaks down. If that is the case, then one would not want to transmit and possibly give up one's location. I would go with an all-band SW receiver and a good scanner.
Now, if we're talking SHTF Radio Kit, that is different. SHTF covers natural disasters also. I would select a CB radio with SSB capability, a large battery pack with which to run the CB, a disassembled A99 and coax, an HF ham radio with a built-in autotuner, longwire antenna, a shortwave receiver (to listen for broadcasts from outside the SHTF area and find out what is going on), and a scanner to monitor local ops.

Like 833 a SW receiver would be a must.
A 1 or 2 kw generator or two 2 kws with tandem link power cord.
An all band all mode radio (mobile).
A 2m HT.
Two CB HTs and a mobile SSB.
30 day supply of MREs for 3.
A 30/30 with plenty of ammo, plenty of wild pigs and turkeys in FL. Gators would be on the menu too.
A Trail Manor Travel Trailer (Collapsible).
Extra gas.
A grill.
Three Bibles.
If things get that bad, you'd need to go to the woods.

LOL I like the 3 bibles! I would add a fold up solar panel, at least 100 watt to charge the batteries. if you have a base camp, solar/wind combo with a battery bank and your shack stays up and running as the world crumbles! |

Get an all band, like an ICOM 706. Runs on 12VDC, Can receive nearly anything including regular AM/FM broadcast, transmit up to 50W on any non restricted band, can be programmed to comm with repeaters, and can be made to transmit on 11 meters if one so desires... |

I've got everything on you list Press Man including a trail Manor 3326 King camper except for the ham kit, and I have three Eagle Spitfire 10 meter SSB hand held that are pretty good radios.

Those TM 3326s are the way to go!!!!!!!! Funny story, guy takes his to a theme park for 2 wks and was told, "Sorry, that's a canvas camper so you can park in the tent section." He got out of his truck and folded it up, he got cheers and laughter because it's a hard side. They let him park in the regular TT section. HAHAHA !
