I ordered a gr45 moble antenna to use as a base station antenna with a galaxy 11 meter radio , not a big yard but on a 20 ft pole and some ground plane wires or some wire mesh on the ground to get signal out better one 4ft ground rod it's been raining a bit so ground is wet , just to test it out and see how it works , I have a me coily base station on the way but not a big enough to yard to put up with out a fence. In case of emergence it would work fine I think . What do you guys think?

If you could it most likely would be better if you could get it up to thirty or thirty-six foot. Thirty -six foot is the distance the signal is for cb (11 meter). Also make sure you have at least a few inches of dirt over the mesh to cut down on any possible ground noise. For me I prefer an 8 foot ground rod. Ask tech 833 he is the best on this subject. Every location is different and what will work for one person might not work as well for other's. Also 833 has many articles on this subject posted here at copper

Back in the day some used a 102 stainless steel whip as a base antenna.

True Jim, Dipole's bed spring's you name it. Just as long as you could get a match on the SWR. I to had used a 108 inch whip and what i did on the shield I had a long wire connected the same length as the whip going in the opposite direction to get a good SWR

I recently dusted off the old equipment, but needed an antenna. I ordered a Sirio PL 5000 "Fighter" mobile antenna with gutter mount. I am very happy with the antenna as a stealthy base antenna. It has great SWR across a huge range of bandwidth. Back in the 90s, I had an Antron 99 w/ gpk and was very happy with it, then. I don't think I'm going to put up a big base antenna, considering how few folks are on CB these days. I have been hearing some occasional skip on the "Bowl" with this mobile antenna.
