After seeing a post by Charlie Brown. I started thinking how many of the CEF Family operate DMR radios? And that maybe we could start a DMR net. The equipment can be purchased very cheap (like the TYT MD-380 $100 or less). Maybe cheaper if Copper would sell it. Just remember this fact. The UHF Repeaters out number the VHF about 100 to 1. And the Radio need to be Compatible with Mototrbo Tier I&II. With DMR you can talk across the Nation or around the World with just a HT. This could be fun to start. Just think all you may need is a little Walkie-Talkie to work the WORLD! 73 all.

What I like about the MD 380 DMR Is like you said. Work the world with 5 watts. Don't have to have external antenna ( mobile or Base ) ( but it can help ) use it anywhere any time. I bought the battery eliminator ( I have a power supply in the house with a cig adapter ) and the carrying case for the 380 also a antenna adapter to hook up for my mobile or base. Like I said on the other section of the post Let us know if you get a net going. Also, What time are you on DMR? |

Sorry not to answer sooner but, yes you need at least a tech ham license then you apply for a DMR INTERNATIONAL LICENSE. The DMR license is free and no need to take a test since you would already have a ham license. You can apply for the DMR license on DMR MARC on the net. |

A Technician Class Ham License is all that you need. It's really cool! You can talk all over the world or just across town, State, or Nation with just a little Walkie-Talkie. And it's really cheap. Copper may want to check out the New TYT MD2017 DMR Dual Band HT Radio.

Like I had said. Tech ticket is what you need. However, you have to have an international DMR I.D. also. I have a tech ticket but I have two TYT MD 380 DMR HANDHELD RADIO'S. I have two international I.D.'s . Two I. D.'s is max you can have. Very unusual to have more than two I.D. You can have as many DMR radio's you want. You can use the i.d. they give you on any of the DMR radio's you own. |

Go to DMR MARC Then go to the section where you can apply for your DMR I.D. All you have to have is your ham license, call sign, then answer all other question's on the form. No test to take. In two day's you should have your I.D. That simple and that easy. |

I will check further on this. I have a th8600 but it isn't DMR, but a TYT radio very satisfied with it.
I also use winlink, and it works great for me., I wonder if any of the guys on the forum use winlink?
I use the radio section of it, also peer to peer.

I see technicians can only operate cw on 80/40 meters, I thought you also could use data, my mistake. Anyhow no problem, You can download fldigi and we can use cw for a contact, it receives and decodes cw real good.

The radio still goes through the repeater. The repeater is connected to the internet that is linked to repeater's all over the world. Some may agree with you, however the radio still can do analog and simplex. I enjoy the DMR as much as I would D-STAR OR FUSION or any other digital format. I still like doing it the old fashion way. I still do 11 meter. I plan on making my general ham license so I can do other radio communication's. I use to feel as you do about the use of repeater's But, to me it is still radio. |

Revpo, I can't do cw. Not my cup of tea. However I do hope to take the general test late fall early winter. I have to much on my plate for now with Doc. I am several state's away from your state. Now we can on DMR do a call on NORTH AMERICA and then switch to TAC 310 OR TAC 311. I don't know how far you are from a DMR repeater but, from what I see your state has several DMR repeater's . By the way a MD 380 DMR is only about 100 bucks. Check it out. |

OK CHARLIE BROWN, nearest DMR is as crow flies 27 miles, I cant reach the repeater near it, there is a knob in front of my area which I have to shoot over.
I do good on 440 for some reason, will look around heard another might go up late SUMMER.

Have you tried a beam antenna? I use a beam to hit a repeater that is about 30 miles away and I have very tall mountain's here where I live also. |

I agree with N8FGB.
Even IF the HT is going through a repeater, the repeater is still connecting to another repeater or remote base somewhere via the internet. Somehow, it just doesn't feel like radio anymore at that point. It seems defiled.
Although my favorite form of operation was CW for many years, I have recently disconnected all the CW hardware from my HF stations. Started playing with AM phone again. I have a restored broadcast transmitter from the 1950's (still uses mercury vapor rectifiers) that is converted to 75m and using a professional broadcast audio processing airchain. Sounds pretty good. It's the polar opposite of DMR, and LOTS of fun!

Dmr is and can be a lot of fun. If your using a radio then your transmitting rf, and even the dvmega and the openspots used on dmr are rf transmitters.
The way I look at the internet portion of DMR,and this is my own opinion only, is the internet is serving as the beam antenna and amplifier for hf to get around the world with, and even without the internet, dmr repeaters can still be used as well as the radios are not just digital, they can be used as analog as well. Even some of the high dollar hf radios uses internet for certain things. Many of us are old school and will be always, but new technology is putting many of the old school pieces of equipment out of business so to speak.
But there is something for (everybody) on ham radio, not just dmr, it's a preference. |

Hey Doc, I go to Beckley often. I have tried to reach you on some of your old 11 meter channel's. I am also a ham and I do the 2 meter 70cm and DMR. When are you usually on the radio and where can we make contact? |

Doc in case you don't know there is a new DMR repeater outside of Beckley on way to Charleston. It is working great. The frequency is 443.875 offset +5mhz and the color code is 1 |

Dale, if you were to go with the DMR you and I could talk without waiting for skip condition's. On DMR we could talk cross country and world like we were local. If I remember you are a ham operator. Right? |

Doc I have a cousin that has the same name as I do. He is a lot younger than I am. I am retired. He works at the Va hospital for Vet's in Beckley . He even sounds the same as I do on the radio. When I talk skip on 11 meter I am 55 double nickel. Local talking I am Fireball. I live in a different county than you but I do go to Beckley often. |
