Hello,
Has anyone modified their amp for hard wire keying? I find that on ssb, the amp relay keeps dropping out with a pause in your voice. My icom radio provides a wire for keying amps. When you key the mic, it also keys the amp. I would appreciate any info on this modification.

You did not say which Texas Star Amp you have. I have had many of these amp's and I have never had any problem with them on SSB. The only problem I ever had relating to SSB with an amp is the radio was not tuned properly for the amp to work correctly. Just a guess but perhaps you do not have the power turned up enough on the radio. I have done that also. |

It's a brand new 350HDV, bought from copper. I have never liked rf sensing for keying an amp! All my vhf amps use hard wire keying, never any dropping out of the relay. I'm driving the amp with my Icom 706 at about 4 watts dead key. The amp is fine, I just tend to pause in conversation which drops the relay. People I'm talking to will miss a couple words before the relay kicks in. Most amps have a connection for direct keying. Someone must have contemplated this before. |

If you want direct key all you have to do is take the key up transistor out and wire it for direct key. If you look on the net you can see how to do it. A three position switch will do the job. |
