The FCC just published the changes to the Part 95 rules & regulations. Most changes have to do with other radio services like GMRS, but one seemingly minor rules change directly affects the CB radio service (CBRS).
Ready for it? Here it is- No longer is it against FCC rules to communicate beyond the 155 mile limit. You heard correctly, you may now legally DX on the CB band.
Almost all of the previous rules still stand, like not increasing the output power of a CB radio, not using a linear amplifier, etc. but the FCC did back off the requirement that a CB radio only be serviced by a licensed tech. You may now work on your own radio with the FCC's blessing.

Could this mean more out of spec radios, distorted audio, over driven systems?? I certainly hope not.

Well, it cannot get much worse than it is now.
Long gone are the days of clean sounding CB radios. It seems that distorted, pinched carrier, echo-chamber CB radios are popular.
When I first got on CB radio at 12 years old, it was rare to hear a bad sounding CB radio.
I remember the first guy who came on the air with an echo mic in my area; It was a novelty, but he didn't run it all the time because it made it more difficult to understand him. Fast forward to today- It sounds like people actually WANT to be difficult to understand on CB. I really don't get it.

Tuning around the CB band here at the home QTH day after day, I hear almost no traffic except on channel 17. Every, and I do mean EVERY station on channel 17 right now is using echo and are overmodulated. There is not a single clean sounding station on the channel tonight.
I sure miss the days when a station running a fairly stock CB radio with a D-104 or a K40 Speech Processor microphone was about as loud as you could get, and they still sounded fantastic and had high fidelity. Sure, there were a few who would 'clip' modulation limiters and pinch carriers, but it was done very tastefully, and they usually stuck to channel 6 (the "Super Bowl" channel). None of the over-modulated stations would show up on the family chat channels. Probably too tired from shooting skip all day.
Thank God the hams are discouraged from using echo mics and roger beeps. I spend 99% of my "radio time" on 2m these days because I cannot stand the echo garbage. Must be getting older (or maybe wiser?).
