Hello all, good news my Sirio 4 element beam is in the mail, so mounting choices will be wooden tilt tower using 2 6x6 with a 4x4 in between them black pipe and antenna for hopefully around 30 ft to feed point. Next option is roof of house on a 10 ft pipe which will be also about 30 feet off ground. All opinions will be appreciated. Also is there such a thing as ground loss if the antenna is on a shingle roof. The antenna will be mounted horizontal.

Roof mounting is OK, as long as the roof is not conductive. If so, it will have a very high takeoff angle, just as if the antenna was mounted low to the ground.
When mounting a beam antenna, the FCC rules on the CB band limit it to 20 feet above the mounting area (roof, ground, etc.). For amateur use, the restrictions are limited only by the FAA or the FCC's 200 foot limit (unless you apply for a waiver).
The trick to getting beams to work well is to get them as high above ground as possible to lower the takeoff angle.
If I had a choice between 30 feet above ground or 10 feet above a roof, I would take 30 feet above ground.

Thanks 833 I have always been under the assumption that if the roof is the right pitch it will fool your antenna into thinking its higher and the toa will be lower. Also the roof is shingle roof. All these years of bad info from the 11 meter band has gave me bad habits. Still pondering on the basement grounding. Also food for thought white marine lmr400. thanks to all for the help

Trinity, Your are getting the best of the best when you speak to TECH 833. Trust me. He if anything is over qualified with his education and experience. You can not go wrong with him. I would go with the tower if I were you. My personal choice. Also install a great ground radial system buried just a few inches under the tower for better ground and reflect. The radial's will need to be cut to the right length for the frequency you will be using. You can't beat a good ground system and reflect. Also try to get you a polyphaser to mount to your antenna for protection of your coax and radio from lightening. I hope this will give you something to think about. Oh, by the way. Reason I would go for the tower is I would not want to take the chance of a strike on the roof of my house. |

I would be in trouble if he sent me a bill for professional consult. I found some new and used phone poles. Antenna is here but cant find time to work on it. I may mount the spt500 above it. Since i live in north carolina in a log cabin (house) and have 1 acre pond in back yard i could trade room food and fishing for antenna set up---anyone need a vacation.lol Thanks all

update---- beams have been here awhile,still in box had to put them in shed and put all my cb projects on the back burner. Between cutting 1 acre grass once a week, getting my garden ready for planting,rain washing gully"s in driveway, pond over flowing, trying to get oldest son in his new house,plus he is finally getting married which will open my basement back up for radio room---hint hint the basement grounding issue will be back in effect,and helping our youngest son with going back to college. My plate is to full right now and looks like it will be mid to late summer on beam project....on a good note ray felts in elkin nc done a total rebuild on my 6 tube elkin elite, and my galaxy 44hp, also my 250b ceramic box, so its a work in progress, thanks to all for the ideas and support and a special thanks to tech 833 for putting up with me as sometimes i feel dumb as a box of rocks. Also thanks to the members who approved my applicatioI I have a cppl of posts in the past few days so please read and replay. Hope everyone enjoys the forum as muh as i do..
