Having "fun". Replaced the old Blazer with a newer Saturn Vue. Nice car, room for both Service Dogs, runs smoothly. The body is a radio man's nightmare. Most panels are a plastic composite, with metal support somewhere underneath. All the usual edges, have curved plastic trim stripes making the use of lip mounts and L brackets problematic

I did mount a 1/4 2m antenna on a bracket screwed thru the plastic trim to the underlying metal. I hate it as my dry fit had a 1 or 2 degree lean, but screwing it pulled the plastic to the metal and the antenna has about a 15 degree slope.

I figure, I'll bolt a piece of aluminium to the luggage bars and mount antennas on that.

This car has made me glad I no longer install for a living, and has convinced me that it's radios before dogs when selecting a replacement car

The luggage rack should work, not sure about the mount, but sure you will invent one <hi>

2 has been dead around here, wx to cold to put my beam up unless we get a quick warm day. I have a 10 element beam at the other place, on APRS 144.390 lot of activity, wish it would drift to PACKET. ALL have a great day

Well Simon, if it makes you feel better....

My car is 88 years old, and the entire top is vinyl with chicken wire and cotton batting under it. The bows from one side to the other are wood.

The only way to mount a 2m antenna is on a bumper clamp! So, no ham radio in the car, only in the pickup (the pickup is a tad newer at just 21 years old).

Also, the car has a 6-volt positive ground electrical system. Let's see you find a 2m radio that will work on that!
