I have a chance to trade my 6900 towards a Galaxy Saturn Turbo. I have owned 3 Galaxy Saturns, but never the Turbo. It's an older one, but it runs 100%.
So is this a good radio?
What will it really do for power, AM and SSB?
Anyone owned one or still have one?
Please let me know, thanks guys! |

Well i have the RCI 2990 and it works good now that i have had a few things done to it to improve the power suplly section. I had the regulator beefed up and a few other internal parts replaced with heavier parts plus 2 computor fans installed on the back. Mine will key between 3 watts on low to as much as 125 on high(i never run it that high) swing to 175 to 200 on AM and about 225 on SSB( These are CONSERVATIVE ratings on my Dosy that ive seen with my own eyes BTW. Please no flames. ) but again i dont run it that hard. The Galaxy sat turbo/2990 is a good radio but if you strive for reilability take it in and have the power supply mods done to it and add 2 fans to the back apron on the radio. Also i had a NPC/mod done and it will give the radio more swing on AM/SSB but thats up to you. |

Well, it's a 2950 shoved into a big black box w/power supply and a small amp in one package. Personally, I find them to be an ugly kludge from a design standpoint. That's all, though. Having had both the ept2950 platform and the ept6900 platform here to try out, I prefer the ept6900 platform. The RF sections are very similar, so don't expect either to outperform the other too much, other than the fact that the turbo has the built in amp. Now, if you really want a black rack mount base chassis to look at, get a DX2517. It will have the performance of your ranger 6900 with the amenities of a built-in mains power supply and nicer quality speaker audio, with the added aesthetics/ergonomics that the homely turbo/2990 will never even dream of having. LOL!

I think you will find the Saturn will eat the Saturn Turbo for lunch. The Turbo is a good rig however , Try to drop a V-8 in a Volkswagon Beetle and drive it in heavy traffic at 5 MPH...It is 100% better to buy a Saturn or Melaka or some base and spend the difference on a base amp of three times the power. Now you are like a Chevy Tahoe pulling a 4 foot Uhaul trailer...Get the picture?

Well, I do like the look Highlander. I might be odd, but what can I say! *G* I believe the power supply has been upgaded. But I will ask, and I guess I need to ask about the power. Man, it sounds like a power house! |

ive got both,a galaxy saturn and a saturn turbo.
and with some very inexpensive upgrades the saturn turbo is "awesome sounding" and will last for years.my tricked out saturn is very nice they are grade A radios but it wont talk with my
turbo.and if you want to run an amp behind it you can run most good quaility ham amps behind her that take 60-120 watts input like ameritrons
al 1500,al 1200 or kenwood Tl922,heathkit sb220. |

Well it looks like the deal feel through. Maybe that is a good thing. Still, it might have been fun to play with it. No biggy, deals come and go, maybe the next one will be even better!

yes a turbo/2990 will indeed drive the hell out of a heathkit SB 220 or an ameritron with out the use or hassles of a driver. They are great radios when they are tricked out and i like them even if they are kinda big, boxy, and gaudy looking IMHO... |

I bought a turbo from a reputable tech, brand new.I put $900 into it and never did like the radio.I had all the goodies on it like 3 fans on the back, power mod, modulation mod,it was a newer one so it had the upgraded power supply.I could never get the echomax 2000 mic to run good on it.The D 104 sounded better than the echomax but had a "chirp" that backfed through the speaker during keyup.So I eventually just used the RK 56 noise cancelling mic.It sounded the best.Dont get me wrong,It sounded great from the other end, and never had any breakdowns, But I would have rather had a 2980wx or a DX99 anyday.Guess what I did with it?I traded it for a Uniden PC 78xl and a Galaxy 400 amp. |

Hmmmm
My D 104 works good but my Turner plus 3 didnt like the radio. I hooked my plus 2 to it and it works good.... Its wierd how mikes and radio will work together or no go....
But i like my 2990 even if no one else likes them!!!! |

..just got a galaxy saturn turbo.. appear to work ok EXCEPT the main tuning knob is ( haywire ) and the meter lights are not bright enough ...need info on IF the main tuning knob can be fixed with just replacing the KNOB witha new one or if the problem is in the CHIP area... up & down buttons are what is used now to change frequencies...( noyice that when you DO use the main tuning knob, that it ALWAYS goes DOWN in frequency...never UP, no matter which direction you turn it )...need help on this situation if any one knows |

Had a Turbo several years ago and have a Melaka now. There is'nt much difference except in tunable frequencies. The Melaka by itself is'nt as powerful but for the price difference you can buy any amp on the market you desire and have more power. I will soon have my Melaka pushing a KLV1000P I got a good deal on and now have approx. 8 times the power of the Saturn and about half the money invested. Don't get me wrong the turbo is a good radio I just sold mine in a fit of stupidity over a large number of yahoos on the radio locally. The biggest difference in the two like I said is available frequencies but how many of us actually use the 240 in a Melaka let alone 500 or 600 in other radios. |

..FINALLY got my galaxy saturn turbo channel knob fixed...had the 3 wired unplugged from the knob, took the knob apart and cleaned the contacts on the connections INSIDE...reassembled and it works FINE..just a few bucks to make it work great...thanks to all of you for your HELP in this situation |

Sodapop,i own one and they would have to pry my cold dead fingers from it !!! the Saturn(atleast mine) will talk the talk and walk the walk.I get about 205 watts all the way turned up. not much modulation that high but she will swing at low power bud.if you get a chance to get one i would tell you to go for it. |

I get about between 175 and 220 on AM forward swing on my 2990 and about the same on SSB. Now i never run it turned up all thy way on AM i only run about 30 watts and let mine swing the rest of the way from their. I had mine NPC/RC modded when i got it and she talks!

If you ever get the chance to get a Ranger 2990dx buy it, as long as there has not been a lot of hands inside the radio! These radios are great, if set up correctly you can get 150 to 200 watts on am with a dead key at 35 watt. I said over the air one day I was going to sell mine, I got 22 telephone calls that day from as far as 50 mile away wanting to buy the radio ( NEVER MAKE STUPID COMMENTS OVER THE RADIO AGAIN!) I see from your profile you have a Super Galaxy, how do like this radio? I had one years ago, it did well for me... |
