Im putting a CB in my Girlfriend's truck, and the only antenna she would accept is the through the glass antenna from Radio Shack. Wish she would go with a good mag mount, but thats all I could get her to use. My question is, what kind of power can this antenna handle? Im thinking 50-70 watts at the most. Whats your thoughts on this.

307 uses an antenna like this he swears by it! Just kidding! Sparky, I doubt it would handle even 50 watts. Shack's site says it's only 22" tall???? Doesn't even look like it has a loading coil (except for the pig tail in the middle). If you can't find any documentation try an export radio on it with a good SWR meter and see what happens.

Ahhh..the 'ol "through the glass" trick..
Actually, they work OK for stock power. I wouldn't try putting more than 25w SSB into it though. The coupling coil probably won't handle it. A buddy of mine put one on the rear window of his El Camino, running a Midland 13-882 and we regularly talked distances of 25 miles on AM, base to his mobile, over hilly terrain. It's not anything I would want for reliable communications though, not so much because of the transmit, but more the fact it doesn't receive very well. Side note: I ran the 2m/440 version of that antenna with mixed results. Great for repeaters, but crap for simplex. |

just hook up a palomar 250 gold to it for 60 bucks and burn it up until it folds over then package it up and send it back with a letter attached and have it say, you just cant beat a palomar! |

Yea, I dont really like the antenna. Just got it on today, but have not had a chance to run it through the paces. I tried to talk her out of it, but that is the only one she would go for. Ill keep you posted. |

we used them at 50,150 and 450 also 800 and all ive got to say is there ok when NO other antenna can be used and mine are rated at 50 watts all bands beleve it or not my 2 meter alinco running 50 watts heated up the thing till it sofened the glue... so much for that antenna. |
