I just put a mobile in my explorer. It is a cobra 148, im using a k40 fiberglass wip and a magnet. My swr according to my radios meter is 1.5 and i am told that it talks fine. Then all of the sudden, i get told that it is sqealing!!! I go home and have my wife jump in and talk and drive while i listen and it does squeal. So bad that you cant hear the person talking. I have turned the mic gain all the way down even and it still squeals. I dont have talk back so it couldnt be feedback. What would cause this. Also something i found very strange is that the meter on the radio will say 1.5, sometimes lower, but if i take my other hand while it is keyed and put it close to the mic side you talk in, the swr slowly raises up to about 2. same if i touch the radio will taking a reading. what is up with this? I sure could use some help here!!!! Thank you.

Jasper, attatch a wire with a ring terminal to the case, at one of the screws holding the power jack, NOT the screw for the final. Ground the radio to the car chassis, as near the radio as you can get.
Also, check your coax to be sure it is connected tightly and the cable is in good condition(not cut or smashed or dented or anything).
K40 magnet mount? I thought that was a steel whip.

Znut, It is a k40 wip and i bought a magnet for it. The one that you are thinking of that comes with the magnet is a steel wip. Im not sure i under stand what you mean and i dont know how to tell what a the final is, and what is a ring terminal? Sorry for sounding so ignorant. thank you for your reply, both of you.

Do you have a modified radio, or is it stock? Are you using a "power mike?" Some modifications and accessories can increase the possibility of squealing.
Regarding grounding the case of the radio, it doesn't matter much which screw you use but it's best to use a screw that only holds the case together, rather than one that also attaches power transistors or such. I suggest drilling a separate hole in the case and adding a secured bolt with a wing nut.
Generally, a stock 148 with a magnetic mount antenna and a non-amplified mike should not squeal at all.

What mike are you running?
Can you substitute another mike in it's place?
Has your radio been recently or ever modified?
Do you have something under the magnet? |

It is the sound tracker feature i figured out. I have no idea why, but when sound tracker is on, my transmit squeals. |
