Actually a decent tv antenna rotor will turn those.

IMHO id go with a ham 4 if you can afford one. Then if you want to get a bigger antenna youll be all set to rock and roll!!!!!

a ham 4?

i dont think so

the pdl 2 has like 2sq feet of wind load

the ham 4 rotor will take up to like 8sq feet of windload

the ham4 is WAY OVERKILL FOR A PDL 2

the cd45 is better than the ham4, if you want a bigger one go with the cd45

I disagree.. I run a ham rotor(have had it for over 7 years now) and it replaces a CD 45. it got mine because it has a break in it and we do get a lot of winds and it keeps my array from wobbling in the winds. They are the best rotor you can but hands down for the $$. I was simply saying for his benefit if he wants to go bigger say a moonraker 4 or a 6 then hed better off get the ham 4.. The he woulndt have to go out and get another rotor.. JMHO!!

a "good" heavy duty tv rotor will handle a PDL2
with absolutely no problem at all.

ive used one to turn a 20 foot long 4 element quad
for coming on 2 years now and its not gave me one problem. and thats much much bigger than a PDL2
and thats without a thrust bearing being on the tower.

ive also got a big ham rotor but just have not felt compelled to put it on the tower yet.

besides the tv rotor will cost 70 bucks and under
the ham rotors are much much higher.

Bullet and Taz...I think your right about the TV rotor. I have an old sales paper on the PLD II and according to it the heavy duty TV rotor will work fine. When I had my old Astro Beam,it's what I used for about 20 years with no problem. You have to be careful these days because many of the cheaper TV rotors have light weight gearing and little or no breaks to keep the antenna from windmilling. 73s 409.....

Well heres an update from my earlier post. We have had 60+ MPHG winds here and my moonraker 4 was facing west now its facing southwest! LOL. What it did was turn in the mast pipe mount up at the top of my rotor. Guess now ill go and see if my cousin can come opver with the cherry picker truck and straiten it out again! This time ill drill a hole into the top of the rotor mast mount through the pipe and use a heavy bolt to keep the sucker from spinning in the mount!

I know I am right about the tv rotor, but I will take the cd45 over the ham4 because i have had better experiences with it.

I think a cheap ham rotor is like 200-300 but dont quote me on that.

But 2990 you have an excellent point!

That ham rotor is as tough as nails! The newer ones well, they..suck! They arent as well made as the ones from the 1980s and before. That ham roto on my tower has gone through he!! and back and just askes for more and takes a whipping and keeps on ah' keepin' on!! BTW i used to have a CD 45 but i traded it in on my ham rotor because the hammer has a brake to keep my antenna from spinning the gears to strip..

I agree with 2990 i have the very old ham m ( i bought it in the late 60's )the one made without the break and i wish now i had spent more money in high winds even only carring a large 6 meter antenna it twisted till the gears strip its now sits in a box... as parts.

taz when i bought mine late 1966 there was the tr 33, tr 44 ( mine) and the ham M. NOW the tr-44 was a ham M without the brake and smaller bearings they were the same otherwise and used the same control box however the tr 33 was not it was a tv rotor only with a clicking step box i agree if it ant got a brake with a CB sized beam your asking for problems the brake is a solid stop the old ones locked into the housing like a dead bolt.... spend the money

see if you can find out the ratings on it i ran a tr-44 for 25 years within load ratings and i took it down only becaues the tower was damaged the other one was overloaded and took only one good beating to do it in... and they were not cheep even back then.
