I've been looking into purchasing a CB and spending up to $200.00 I need one with good power to send and receive. Something that isn't too complicated, yet not simple. Please give me your suggestions and also where I can buy them from for example this web site, other web sites, or phone numbers of businesses to purchase them from. My primary use for the CB will be for traveling. Thank you!

One more question everyone is talking about mods for their CB's. This interests me, can someone let me know in what they recommend to me what type of mods can be done to the CB's also. Thanks again!

A Uniden PC78 should fit your bill nicely, should run about $120 with a tuneup.

Well here is what i would tell anyone who would ask me?....I think I'd suggest a SS-3900...of course I would gladly put a switch on the roger-beep before allowing them to have it...LOL>.. Just for the money its a hell of a radio. Plus the SSB aspect of it will allow you to get away from just local talk about road conditions. My thoughts are ..Yeah its great to talk while your driving and all.. but if you need to do anytime just sitting waiting and not wanting to hear the local gossip...thats when the SSB comes in.... I have made many contact from the car while my wife has been at an appointment or shopping. Anyway its quiet time away from all the bussle of AM not to mention if you have kids....LOL...I have been away from the FOURM for a few weeks due to health(nothin serious) and had a few of my fellow forum user inquire?...COOL... makes me feel almost needed...LOL....hope my lil suggestion is of some help...the SS-3900 for the money I think is about the best value for the dollar out there for a beginer...It has a lot of nice features you won't find on you local Radio Shack radios and about half the money...JUST my opinion...for what it is worth...OF course it no way compares to the HR-2510 the radio of the GODS....LOL>...have a good day....OHIOBIKER...TRans-AMerica 5275

If you can find one get a President HR2510 or
Lincoln if you can find one for under $200.You can find a HR2510 for under $200 at a hamfest.
They're a great radio.AM/FM/USB/LSB/CW and you
have a Freq counter where you can get to just about any freq you want. You can even talk 10 meter
ham on it.They're great radios. There a mobil radio
that are loud, clear and will out talk some base radios.

Hey,you said you'd be using your CB for traveling.
Are you a truck driver or are you putting your CB
in a regular vehicle?If it's a regular vehicle
you could try a magnetic mount antenna like a
Wilson 1000 or a K40.Those two companies also make a scaled down version of those two antennas
(Lil Willy and K30) that work really well too.I
have a Astatic 575 power mic right now that works
great,I'm tryin to sell it to put money into another radio.Go with a 575 or D-104 Astatic mic.
They work great.

ncrebel,

Putting CB into a regular vehicle. When you say a scaled down version do you mean they are shorter antennas or just cheaper? Thanks for the suggestion of power mic!

Doc, both really. Shorter antenna length which cost less. If you wanted to go with 5000 watts which is ridiculous, go for the Wilson 5000. I believe the Wilson 1000 and K40 can handle 1000 watts each but run perfectly fine (and are probably designed for) with a stock radio. The smaller antennas ncrebel mentioned just aren't as tall, lower profile if you will. Some think that longer antenna's help with a little more reach in communicating and gotta admit that's my opinion too whether right or wrong. You could mount a 102" stainless whip which is arguably the best all around CB antenna but sometimes the heigth may be a drag, litteraly through drive-thru's and places of that nature. Kind of depends on what the look you want for your vehicle. Either the K40 or Wilson brand I think is much better made than a cheap Radio Shack magnet mount, but that is argueable too. Bruce talks ham all over the world on a R/S antenna. I guess I'll just shut up after agreeing with ncrebel. Those two give great swr's right out of the package and are easy as hell to mount.

guys i ran a k40 for years it died of old age so it is a good choice so is the wilson so is the rad-shack but i feel from my own experince that buying a antena of 45 inches or less has too big a loss over a 45in long and up antenna you are waisting your money all of these antennas come in 4-5 foot long ver. i had real bad luck with several antennas stay away from no-name ones made in china... you get what you pay for.... i run a 7 foot antenna cut for 28.5 mhz and work the world on it today on the way home on 29.6 fm i worked pa4ra in holand for the zillinth time when moble size ...... antenna size counts.

Hey everybody, I noticed that nobody reccomended a Midland 79-290. I know that a lot of you out there may think that they are junk or something, but look at the facts. I purchased a brand new one in the box for 159.00 dollars. It has dual finals, detachable face (great for security when being used as a mobile), 240 channel capability with one super easy solder conection, the entire 10 meter ham band, side band operation, weather receiver, local receive switch (works like auto-squelch), 4 memory channels, instant channel 9 and 19, and most of all, it is one of the smallest radios on the market. I don't think that hardly anybody has one, but I absolutely love mine. It looks very modern and sounds great. Any newbie to the CB world should really consider this radio because of it's major features and ease of operation. Plus it fits in many places very easily and looks more modern that other radios.

Well I don't mean to start a new argument, after all, we all prefer different radios. But, the 30 dollar wally world specials would work for years with a coat hanger stuck in the antenna jack (had a friend who used that setup for a base). I'm sure that it automatically reduced power so as not to fry itself with the SWR being probably 25:1, but try doing that with some of these $400 radios. I have read some posts where some guys said they absolutely hat Midland, and of course Copper doesn't sell them so that may say something right there too. But honestly, the 79-290 really kicks some butt. Plus with the super easy modification for the channels, it may help bring in some new comers into the hobby. I thought I was the Mr. Electronics after I modified mine, it definately showed me that if you take your time and go slow, anybody can do this stuff. I highly reccomend this radio, and to all of you who may have had bad experiences with Midland in the past, things have changed. Give one a chance, you may be surprised!!!
