I purchased a Palomar 250 . Just says palomar 250 on the face and has on/off switch and HI/MED/LOW switch and preamp switch . Can any one tell me if this amp is AM AND SSB ?? Also, how many watts does it take to drive it ??? Thanks for any help, Sam |

I have the same amp as you are talking about. It has an automatic SSB delay on it and it does work quite well. On AM, it will work best on low and Med power, if you put it on high, it tends to distort your signal at times. I feed mine with a stock 4 watt radio and have had no problems. People will tell you to turn down your deadkey to 1.5 to 2 watts, but I have no problems with the 4 watts I put into mine. From what the advertisement said when I bought mine, up to 5 watts carrier is ok. Not a bad amp for the money.

The reason your amp distorts on high power (mostlikely) is because of the 4w carrier input. The low and medium power settings suppress that input so as not to distort. This is the reason why you input less carrier such as 1.5w. |
