Some of my old friends tell me I don't run a base station anymore because I run mobiles at my base station.
I used to run a COBRA 142 ,a Galaxy Saturn,and a Washington base among many more such as Pierce-Simpson,Dak,Browning,and the list goes on.
The main reason I use mobiles is for convenience as I have quick disconnects on all of my radios and in all of my vehicles.I can change out a radio from base to mobile and from mobile to base in five minutes or less.
Sometimes I run the Galaxy 99 in my truck,sometimes in my car,and sometimes on the base.
If I get the feeling I'll pull the Voyage out of my sons truck and run it on the base.I enjoy running my show like this .It would not be practical to try and install a Saturn in any of my vehicles.
As far as performance all of my mobiles will perform as good as any of the bases.Yes the big bases look impressive when your buddy walks into your radio room,but at this age and at this stage in my life I'm not trying to impress anybody. |

Right on! Also why pay an extra $100 for a radio with a built in power supply when you already have one power supply in your shack that can power them all! Saves a lotta $$$$ in the long run.

Yep. I run a 2-meter handheld as a base, a mobile, and a portable. Also ran an rci2950 as a base for years, I used the money I saved for a small amp.
I have a Galaxy 2517 base now, just because I wanted one, not because of any performance difference. |

a "base station" by definition, is a stationary transmitting point. It doesn't matter if you run a Collins or a walkie talkie on a tv antenna. It's stationary. The main advantage of base stations, aside from built in power supply(notice that many high power HF tranceivers have separate power supplies) is that the knobs are spread out over a larger cabinet face, for easier access. Other than that, in many cases, a base station CB or 10m rig has the same basic radio circuit as a similarly capable mobile. |
