I have a Grant XL but I am not sure how many watts it is pushing but I am going to take it back to the shop where I bought it and find out what it is putting out because when I bought it the radio shop said it was peaked and tuned. If I was to hook up an amp would the Kl 400 be a good choice? If I used the Kl 400 how many watts would be the best coming out of my radio becaue I will probably have it peaked and tuned again and I would want it to be at the best ratings for the amp. Would the mic gain, rf gain and the power mic controls effect the amp and would turning them up burn something up ? I am new to cb's and need some help, sorry if I sound stupid

The shop can help read what it's putting out. Try for a 1 to 1 1/2 watt dead key. That means when you key it up (do not talk on it), it will read watts and then should swing up higher when you modulate. The 400 is a good amp. 1 to 1 1/2 watts will drive it fine and keep it cool. You can have the shop put it on the meter and adjust it for that or Copper has a SWR/Power Meter for $30 and check it yourself. The mic gain on the radio might overmodulate you into distortion if cranked up too high. Will have to try it with a friend at a fair distance and tune it where it sounds the cleanest.
RF gain will hopefully be able to turn your wattage down to an acceptable level with the amp on, and back up when you run barefoot. Once again, a meter will show you this one also.
Power mics are good but once again, use the buddy to see where you can tune it to sound clean and not distort.
