Im adding an 8 pill high drive amp. I have a 130amp alternator , 4 batteries, and 2 1 farad capacitors. Which is better batteries or caps or both combined. I cannot upgrade to a larger aternator so it must be done with batteries etc. Any suggestions on the way to go? Thanks Possum |

More batteries is the way to go. The problem with capacitors in the application you are using them for is they are quick decharge. In other words, caps would be better for a competition stereo in a vehicle. When the bass note hits, the stored power in the cap discharges and makes up for the lost current of the battery and charging sysem. Caps are no good for long term draws, like keying up your linear...Eddie |

I have an 8 transistor amp driving it with a 1 transistor 2290 driver. It is ALL MY ALTERNATOR CAN DO to keep up with this amp unless I'm turning about 2000 rpms or more. I have a 175a LEECE NEVILLE that's been benched showing 190a output.
You may do as you wish, but I prefer running an amp at full potential instead of starving a larger one. A 2x4 amp would run well with the charging system you have.
As to the caps vs batteries, batteries win. All of your batteries should be of like kind....same amperage, same discharge rate.
It will also help to upgrade the wire from your alternator to your battery. This is one of the weakest links.
Powermaster makes 170-200a alternators that are often bolt on replacements. |

they both help,you dont need all of that just to run a 8 pill.use your 130 amo alt,and 2 batterys,and 2 caps. that should be plenty |

Thanks for all the info, also wondering how big the wire from the alternator to battery should be and how big the wire from front battery to back batteries should be. |
