Hey guys, a little tip which I'm sure many of you know of already so maybe this is just a reminder, keep your sensitive phone conversations restricted to the land line. I bought a Bearcat scanner a couple of weeks ago and I'm picking up many (approx 25-30 freqs) cordless phone freqs on the 30-50 band within a radius of almost 1/4 of a mile from my house. How? Hook it up to a base antenna like my Skylab that is 32 feet in the air and bingo!! In less than 2 weeks I have heard a neighbor ordering checks consequently giving out her SSN, home address and bank account number, credit card orders, an XO (executive officer) on a Naval warship talking from his home to officers on the ship regarding various issues (nothing secure) on the ship and one marriage that is about to go into the toilet. Amazing what a hundred dollar scanner and 40 dollar antenna can do.

metro when the 46/49 meg phones were the only ones there was a story printed about a guy who bought 2- 6 elem hygain 6 meter beams and juat added small extenders to each elem so he had 12 el vert on 46 mhz( the base station freq. With this he could hear SKIP phone ...thats right pick them up on skip and as far away as 60 miles to one in a high rise building You are absouly right with my 6 meter ground plane at 50 foot and a bearcat 25 year old scanner i can hear phones in largo and down into baypines both 3-5 miles away but thoes days are numbered since all the new ones are on 900mhz and 2.4ghz one more intresting point in some states like florida it is illeaul to monitor these phones unless your a demacrat lissing to a republican leader on his cell phone then its legal to print his conversation in the paper.

Now for some additional fun, get a scanner that will receive the cellular band and see how many conversations of MUCH more sensitive nature are broadcast on analog cellular phones. Of course, this practice is frowned upon by many, and the receivers are almost impossible to obtain anymore. Being 'in the business', I have obtained a couple of 'unblocked' receivers capable of cellular reception (Icom R2 and R10. The R2 rides mobile and the R10 stays in the workshop).

However, an inexpensive 'pre-ban' scanner can provide the same hours and hours of endless entertainment which comes from the cellular band. Cellular base signals can be received for many, many miles by a sensitive receiver and high gain, high elevation 900 MHz. antenna. I get clear signals from 50 miles away and more.

Oh, I have come to the conclusion that everyone within a 50 mile radius of me has an incurable potty mouth.

The Bearcat XLT80 goes up to 956 Mghz so I get a few phones in the 900 band but most are 42-49. Found freqs for Navy SEALS which are across the bay from me, Coast Guard etc.. This new toy is ruinning my TV life!

...shame shame shame on you folks for being so "nosy ".....have done the same thing with my old bearcat 560 mobile scanner in the house, mighty interesting to hear what your neighbors say about their "fine out standing " relatives and friends...and co-workers, too !! have heard reliable conversations from as far as 3 miles away, but they need to learn to stand still and not walk through the house as they talk...seems when they get to the GOOD part, they get noisy and full of static....some of the older cordless phones use 44.000 Mhz for one side of the conversation and 46 - 47 - 48 Mhz for the other side of the system.....got a question: can a ALINCO dr - 580 do any good at recieving the 800 Mhz stuff, hooked up to an outside antenna ?? mine has been modified to recieve 800 - 999 Mhz, but figured I was too fer away from the towers to hear any thing worth while, or maybe just one side of the conversation ( NO FUN )....just asking for others to learn that may have one of those " old " radios ( no my alinco dr-580 is NOT for sale !! ).... having fun with my radios....BIG FOOT

This is boring to me any more. I used to do the same thing with my scanner, now I work for the phone Co. After you listen to so many you realize that most of the conversations are mundain. However, I was listening to 2 women talking one day and thought it was just another "so what did you do last night" conversation, but then found out they were lovers. Wow, that was interesting.

My old Bearcat 800 XLT does a good job and I have a portable TV which gets cell phones on the upper UHF channels if you tune carefully. Probably getting an image of the main frequency from 800MHZ.

Now keep in mind depending on what state your in and ill speek for florida DONT discuss what your hear in florida that will get you HARD jail time. There are exceptions like you hear a muder being planed or your out to get a republician but as a rule the courts here dont cut you much slack. I tend to aggree with the concenses that if you put it out on the air it's fair game o by the way thoes baby monitors are not covered and you can hear lots of good stuff like a couple near me tho had one and every night i got to hear them " getting aquanted" well one night after asking them to turn the thing off i taped a good one and pasted the tape on their door and no more monitor. Now stupid as it sounds someone did sue in florida a few years back over monitoring with a scanner and it was tossed out because only devices attached to a phone line are covered by the florida law and only devices covered by Sec. 610 of FCC rules ( cell phones) fall under federal laws all others are fair game including cb and ham.

.... scanner enthusiast near me advises to install the 2 - piece "signal amplifier " mounted below the scanner antenna and other part inside house plugged in ac current will help to being in those WEAK signals on scanners...they are primarily intended to be used for vhf/uhf tv signals but will work fine with scanners too, read the fine print on back of package or owners manual...most all of them will work in 30 - 50 mhz range....... also was told that an old-style U H F double bowtie tv antenna ...mounted on a push-up pole will work for scanners as a BEAM antenna...any one know how true that is ??...BIG FOOT

....BRUCE i am confused as to the words you used... ( exsempt ) does that mean it is OK to record another cb or amateur station...or ... is it a BIG "no-no " ?------------- the recieve amps work well on scanners, made for tv reception but they DO work well for scanners. i have noticed that "rat shack " sells " scanner amplifers " for a greatly HIGHER price than the TV signal amplifiers.....RAT SHACK must think scanner owners are very dumb ( of course one of their two models is for handhelds and the other is to be used in a house )... *** having FUN with my radios, whether just listening or having the optional - use transmitter ** BIG FOOT

everyone knows my spelling in not the best but NO CB OR HAM USER is covered by sec. 605. Sec 605 in short covers secert comunications things like scrambled incoded anything that is not ment for public ears. We the cb/ham user were excluded in the early 1980's making it legal to record/replay cb/ham comunications. Now i know its anoying and now allowed under cb rules but it is NOT illegal you cannot sue HOWEVER in some states it is ILLEGAL to record voice or photo image of ANYONE and in thoes states you could rue afowl of that law in florida its a gray spot you might. On the other hand c-phones and incoded radio carries very stiff fines and jail time. Now before you lissen to that c-phone remember the phone user will get you under this law unless your a demacrat who recorda a republician leader and then prints it in the paper.. funny how things change when politicaly expedent. As for tv amps they have poor noise figures but coax runs of say 100 foot on 800 mhz would lose 13 db so 20 db of of preamp gain @ 4 db of noise is still + 16 db more that you had yep works good.

...steak ? shucks we are having ribs for supper ( " dinner " to you city folks ) (lol)...scanner listening is linds wierd at times... 3 - 5 counties sheriff dept will all be QUIET, then within 10 - 12 minutes 4 out of the 5 will have something MAJOR going on ( 10-33 traffic, car chases, family fights, etc. ) the after an hour or so 2 of the 4 will be back quiet again....have some info for some of you SERIOUS scanner owners...buy several scanners with small amount of memory channels in them... program scanner # 1 with one county ..... scanner # 2 with another city/county....scanner # 3 with federal folks.... scanner # 4 with cordless phones, miscallaneous stuff... scanner # 5 with what ever is left over... run the antenna lead from outside to a signal splitter ( with or without signal amplifier ) and then to the outside antenna jack for each scanner..... so if scanner # 1 is busy... the other 4 will still be scanning for something else to happen... then you can listen to secveral situations going on in several areas at one time... where if you had a 1000 channel scanner and one freq. was IMPORTANT but too long winded...you can still listen to them and what ever else may be going on... i may not be explaining this correctly but if you have questions, I will try to answer them....just an idea for the serious listener...can usually find small memory channel scanners at yard sales, or ham radio conventions.... having fun with my scanners, cb radios and amateur radios.... Keep in mind that if your not talking about what you hear not much can be done... unless they stick a mike inside your shack... its realy a stupid law if the c-phone people want to stop you all they need is to go digital with incription and THEN you WILL go to jail if caught.... THAT'S a outright violation of Sec 605 THATS WHAT 605 REALY WAS ALL ABOUT NON STANDARD COMUNICATIONS. If its scrambled you got to copy someones algarithem to decode it its a clear GOT-YA! Bigfoot,
I am not sure what the cell phone freq's are but I just got rid of a realistic Pro 2021 base scanner that I modified to recieve from 806 MHz to something around 965 MHz. I am not sur if this is any help but if cell phone freq's are within the 806-900 range, then this is one scanner that will do this. I just saw a brand new one on a websight sell for $50, not bad...Eddie

I know it's an old thread, but I just read it today.

I was cleaning up a friend's pair of Radio Shack 5 channel walkie talkies and heard some noise on one of the channels. Turned out to be "bedroom noises" from my neighbor across the street. It must have been a baby monitor, but I never could figure why the transmitter was in the parent's bedroom. I figured out where it was coming from when I heard and saw the kids going in and out the side door.

I guess I'm not a perve, or I wouldn't have given my friend his radios back...

I have a friend that uses an old transmitter model Hallicrafters HT-30, I believe. After a while of monitoring, he joins in on the conversation with the transmitter for as long as the other party allows. Strange sense of humor!
