is there anyways to install a regular 4 pin male mike plug in my 3500 instead of using that goofy 8 pin plug?

Yeah, you can change it, I'm far from a tech, and i've done several of them. If you look on the back of the 8 pin plug, there are just three wires connected, take an old 4 pin plug from another radio, wire it:
1. shield
2. audio
3. Tx
Then your cobra and galaxy mikes will work. If there are more than 3 wires used, someone has added something to the radio, like a voice processor.

The radio has some stub ended wires( Violet, brown, green, yellow, red) to what i assume is either a hookup for the optinonal scan board or the processor board. Ill ask my tech he knows about these rigs more than i do. Ive always kinda wanted to install a SP1A in my 3500 but if i did that id like to be able to make it switchable..
