moon,
Open speaker side of radio. Put a resistor inline with one side of the speaker terminal to any chassis ground. The resistor value will be your choice and the amount of volume you want. You could even put a variable resistor inline with an on/off switch. A good value to start off with is anywhere between 100 ohms to 200 ohms. You will probably get a few different opinions on how to create talkback, but this is the way I prefer...Eddie

Look on the solder side of the board and locate the grond pads for the ext. speaker and pa speaker. (they are the really big ones close to the jacks) Jump them with a resistor of your choosing (I like to use a 100 to 450 ohm to get the volume you like) You can even put a switch in line with it to turn it off and on. You can also do this same trick with a 500 ohm pot, but it's hard to find one that will fit in a radio and not stand out like a sore thumb.
