... for some folks a RANGER 2950 is a bit complicated to operate while driving down the road, but them so is eating, and operating a cell phone while driving too !!....2950 are not that big compared to the galaxy 33 - 55 - 88 and such so that should be no problem..... BIG FOOT

Well, what do you mean "frills"? I am assuming that frills means useless features and anything else you could do without. The Galaxy line has "bells and whistles" or "frills". The ranger 2950's features are all usefull as far as I am concerned are all usefull and it doesn't have echo, which bigbob says he doesn't like. Its got everything he asked for in his post. One of these days maybe the wife will let me get one.

http://www.rangerusa.com/tr-696f.html

The TR-696F features a new Advanced Noise Filter Circuit for improved signal to noise ratio, providing high noise rejection capability that others just claim they have. This one works! You will instantly notice marginal signals pop in better when you turn on the switch and listen to your reception with a quieter signal. The Advanced Noise Filter circuit de-emphasizes the audio high frequency response in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of weak signals. This provides you with the ability to receive those marginal signals with much more clarity and understandability. Combined with the Noise Blanker and the Automatic Noise Limiter, this has to be the quietest mobile stations ever manufactured.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Midland 79-290. AM/SSB, expandable to 6 bands with one drop of solder, detachable face, dual finals, weather band, scan, and it's small. It also does the 10 meter band when you give it the extra six bands. No more frills, no problems, nothing you don't need. The 2950's are great, but you don't need all the other stuff they come with. I think I am the only one that has one in Colorado. I love it. Just my 2 cents.

Good suggestions folks. Also, look under subscriber preview. The magnum 257 got a good review and looks good for the $$$!
