How about a chat room for us copper members? I think it would be great to talk to other radio operators live on this website. I have seen some websites that have a java based chat client that connects to an IRC server and then you can chat with others in the room that the client directs you to. I just thought I'd mention this idea. I do not know if someone else has asked for a chat room yet.

I think it's an excellent idea!! I think it would provide a great range of ideas on people who are working on equipment and want to ask right away some troubleshooting techniques if any. Although you open up a can of worms with live chat. Have to keep what I like to call "the filth words" to a minimum. What do ya say copper? sound like a good idea?????????????

One thing i always like to talk about and listen to guys talk about is antennas and old time rigs and stories of the "good ol days" when CB was fun! When it gets were its all technical mumbo jumbo and rules and regs well, it gets boring and im sure theres a few (well more than a few) that can side with me on that! :-)

While the idea of "setting up a chatroom" may sound simple, there are some important considerations when associating a respected commercial website with a public chatroom.

I have been involved in implementing over 215 commercial radio station website chats over the past two years. We maintain our own chat servers to ensure integrity and allow e-marketing through user registration.

A chat such as I have on my site has the advantage of being accessible through traditional IRC clients like mIRC, pIRCh, etc., as well as a browser java client(my favorite).

Some second party chats only use an application which is downloaded and tied to the user ID to increase security.

Others use the archaic "html refresh" mode which is totally unacceptable in my opinion.

In any case, it is of paramount importance that these chats have a Moderator in place to monitor activities and keep the chat clean from those who would ruin the experience.

This requires a roster of volunteers or members of the "management". Scheduling these moderators can be a nightmare. One way to get around this is to allow a trust system to be set up, much like the forum moderators, whereby any trusted individual can be permanently made an operator at logon, with special moderator priveleges automatically endowed upon logon.

Just a sidebar, I have operated DXRING and CBRING for over a year and rarely see activity there, even though I have "advertised" it extensively as being available to all radio hobbyists. I had hoped it would be a useful tool and that it would generate enough interest to warrant setting up a list of chat ops/mods. The particular system I use does allow for a high level of security against all the detrimental stuff that goes on out on the web, and allows the chat window to be "undocked" from the webpage and resized to make it less intrusive on the screen.

I would be happy to set up a chat specifically for Copper users, with a registered, protected channel ID for testing the idea. copperelectronics.com could easily pull it into a frame on this site just like any other material and also specify the "look" and functionality, plus whatever "bots" are needed to filter profanity, report abusers, etc.

I am offering my knowledge and assistance on this project if desired.

I think perhaps if Copper were to feel secure in the knowledge that there would be some moderators available for the chat at all times, then possibly they would be more open to the idea.

Thats why there are bots in there 707, to moniter the room when no-body is in there. I would be a moderator for the room.

I'm aware of how bots work, and they do not take the place of a real operator. Why would you monitor the room when nobody is in there? They are unnecessary for keeping the channel open, since registered channels have adjustable timeouts. I do have some cool swearkicking, info delivery, and advertising scripts though. I'm working on one right now that can monitor chats over a period of time to maintain a particular topic, so that for example, a music chat room doesn't deteriorate into a political rant.
