Ok guys, out of the box, running completely stock, FCC accepted/approved, 40 channels with or without SSB capability, which radio is the best that you can buy?
No peaking/tweaking/modding allowed, I am talking about stictly a stock radio with stock mic.. No amps or add-ons allowed (ok, a freq counter is allowed!) |

Galaxy 959, Texas Ranger 296 and 696, Midland 29-290. These are current production models (Which I aSSumed you meant. (;) |

Base or Mobile?
Base - Galaxy DX2547. FCC Approved.
Mobile - One of the Cobra's.
That's pretty much it in the "FCC Approved" category!

Older collectable models: Uniden Madison (has dual conversion SSB receiver (same with Cobra 2000 & 148GTL mobile plus late models President Madison Madison & Grant). The early model Madison & Grant were single conversion SSB. |

Uniden Grant LT is a mobile with SSB. 100% FCC legal/approved 40 channel CB. Unfortunately Uniden has stopped production one these but I mention it because there are many brand new one's still to be found in the box in stores and on the internet. I happen to be a Uniden fan and think any of their mobiles would fit your description, but the GRant LT was the only recent model with SSB. |

..older model cobra 148 gtl are reliable and the Uniden grant is a decent rig....the pc - 122 unidens were all right, but apparently SOME had flaws in them (? ) ..some of the radio shack models were all right as were the Midlands of 1990 era...BIG FOOT |

Texas Ranger TR-296DX uses a Cobra/Uniden type dual conversion receiver- very quiet & sensitive/selective. I see them for sale new at some dealers. |

OK, i've pretty much got it narrowed down to a Cobra 148 ST/NW, and a Uniden Grant XL, both brand new and unmodified. Help me make up my mind guys
I've read negative things about Cobras lately, but a lot of good about Uniden..
Which one?? |

Get the Uniden Grant XL as it has the EPTO14811Z dual conversion receiver chassis I have been referring to. Best receiver in a 40 channel CB with FCC certification- a legal radio. |

...only NEGATIVE thing I have seen about the NEW cobra mobiles is the LIGHTS around the knobs..they do NOT help you know which knob you are turning when it is dark... the knob is illuminated but you not know if it is the rf gain, or the squelch or mic gain or what knob it is you are turning... experiment and discover this for your self...YOU may like that, but I did not on a cobra 29 WX...just trying to HELP you decide....BIG FOOT |

personally i prefer the grant over the cobra. it is a great radio and quiet. |

Well, I sold off all my "illegit" gear today, just spent my lunch break running down to the local shop... Wanted to get rid of the non accepted gear because (yes, I know I will get flamed for this!) I am going to take my Tech ticket test in the next weeks. Yes, I know, some buckethead out there will say that the government will have my name and address now - well, I am a Marine Corps reserve MP, a former LAPD officer, and have a security clearance at my full time job, so, I don't think this will give them anything they don't already have!!!! LOL
Turns out that yes, the Cobra was brand new, but the Grant XL was a factory refurb (couldn't tell, looks brand new!)... $40 price difference..
ANYHOW, I was torn as to which one to get until I knew this, so, I went with the Cobra 148... I got it out to the car in the parking lot, plugged it in where my 2950 used to be, and sure enough, not all display lights came on.. Hooked up the Mic and the coax, and sure enough, the receive was NON EXISTANT... No static, no white noise, NOTHING... All the lighting worked on it, and I heard a popping noise coming from the speaker when I changed the channels, so I boxed it back up and brought it back in to show the shop owner. He tested it out and had the same results... He asked if I wanted another Cobra or the Grant, and he gladly did the exchange for the Grant and gave me back the price difference.. We tested out the Grant on his bench setup before I took it out of the store - it's all at FCC spec power, sounds DAMNED good on the receive, and all radio-check reports came back that it sounds excellent... Audio volume was a little bit low, on par with a cheesy stock mic, but that can be easily remedied with a power mic I would hope
SO, I guess the out-of-the-box failure of the Cobra made the decision for me - hopefully the Grant XL will live up to everything everyone has been saying!

By the way, payday is coming up in the next few days and I want to feed a power Mic to this baby - he has some D104-M6Bs there, some 576s,a black Road Devil, and a Telex Turner Road King... Any suggestions as to which one of these to go with?
I've had a D104 before on my old SS3900 a number of years back - REALLY REALLY LOUD, but I wouldn't think I would need to go that far with a stock radio...
So, would the folks that were so helpful with the choice of radio be willing to recamend a mic to go with this fine radio??

Interesting Dale i had 2 of them and found them not to be very stable on SSB. Well now we know why there are so many kinds of radios out there got to keep all of us happy! |

cobra 19dx with 1 inch firestick.
Its the best! It wont do more than 4 watts so you could never get busted and its easy to fit in over head storage compartments and you cant add extra channels. |
