A freind of mine has a motor-home he just got and he needs a decent antenna on it. It already has a gutter mount but he wants a good antenna that he can mount on it like a wilson silver load or something of the like. He only runs the reg 40 so he dosent need a fancy antenna or anything. Id like to help him but if i put one on id mount it to the top luggage rail or the latter that goes up the back to the top luggage racks. what do you all think? |

need more details, specifically:
I assume he wants to use the CB while mobile?? He could probably mount a 102" whip on top somewhere but it would nail every underpass/tree/low hanging power lines(ouch!) he drove under. That would be bad for sure and would probably cause some damage. I've seen mirror mounts on RV's but do not know personally on how effective they are. Now for the question:
Is your friend plan on using it while touring, sitting in an RV campground, both? Wilson does make a fine antenna in varying versions. If he could mount it on top, even the Little Wil with it's shorter reach might be okay (I'm looking at overall height if mounted on top, RV's are tall). That may be able to fit the bill. Will a magnet mount work or is the RV fiberglass which requires something different? Co phase like a Firestick? What's he looking for and we'll try and help. Francis and Shakespeare both make some good antenna's that are shorter in length that could work also.

Please, serious answers ONLY!! I think i will set him up with a wilson fiberglass mounted on the rack and see if that works. If not then ill mount it on his mirror mount.. He doesnt need to talk around the world just to whomever hes travelling with and thats usually me.. |

May I reccomend the use of a Wilson 1000 trucker mirror mount. Mount it to the driver side mirror with a shaft long enough so that the load coil is even with the top of the vehicle or an inch or two above. Use a stainless steel mirror mount with a 5/8" star washer between the stud and mount. Use 18' of mini 8 not coiled but looped. Run the power wires directly to the battery. Both pos. and neg. The whip will clear most over head problems because of it's location toward the middle of the road. The vehicle will act as a radiator thus giving good performance front and read but will be less directional than is it were below the body and the signal were blocked by the vehicle. Iron Mask |

Re HC
If the motor-home has a ladder on the back just use one of those three piece verticals that do not require ground radials. Just use some U brackets and tighten them by hand. Just tight enough to allow you to remove them without whipping out a ton o tools. Perhaps one of those Wing Nuts if you can find one big enough. |

I have a cheap fiberglass fransis on my big truck and with a uniden 66xl that had some work but nothing crazy done to it I talk a honest 7-10 miles down the road. not bad for a $16 ant. swr. with a 18 ft piece of mine 8-u if think was 1.3 on ch.20 But honestly if I didnt think it would get stolen I would run a wilson trucker 1000 or 2000 |

The guy doesnt want to spend major buckage on an antenna system he just wants something he can use from time to time. So that rules out anything over 40.00 i guess. |

I would mount a silver load on the rear ladder.The load would be above the rest of the m/h and should work pretty good.It's a very flexible antenna so it would bend if it hit a tree or bridge |

Me and him will go to a shop i know of in Ohio and look for an antenna and mount. But what id like to knos is if it will be ok to run more than 18' of coax from the radio to the antenna because the antenna will be mounted on the back ladder rack and the coax will not reach the radio if 18' will be used.. |

If he is going to mount it like that is he runnig the coax down the back and under the coach and then bring it in up front just curious. I was thinking maybe you could make up a real cable out of some good ole rg-8u the real stuff just a idea I know some of them rollin homes are long and this would give him a custom fit(length)with out much loss. |

MFJ-340 (34.95)handle's heavy to medium antennas.(mirror/luggage pipe clamp mount.
Check with Copper's i think they can get these..I use one for my MFJ-1432 Ruffrider 621/2 in.2meter ant.works great.... |
