Skip has been phenomenal in the late afternoon here in TX. Been talking East to West to North and NO SOUTH OF THE BORDER!!! Yippee! Very quiet background and big signals the past three days since that last x-class flare. Ch 38 LSB has been hoppin.

Bruce this leads me to a question. Please explain this one to me hehe. Why is it that you can't talk very far on 2 meter FM (thus the need for repeaters)but you can work other countrys on 10meter FM?I don't understand this.I know you can sometimes talk greater distances with 2 meter if the conditions are right...trophuspheric
(spelling^^)ducting I believe it's called.Educate me o wise one.:) lol

Very good question ! Ok the higher you go in frequency the less likely it is that radio signal will be reflected back to earth ( skip) Now 2 meters does because if the same frequency reflection changed do much better than 10 meters in tropicpheric inversons but they are only good for 200-500 miles. So its a matter of which reflector works at that frequency and how high up the reflector is in space. Now SKIP DOES HAPPEN ON 2 METERS but it is VERY rare. My farest contact on 2 meters no repeaters was from inside the jail on a supper tropo opening my 200 millawatt ht was being heard on 146.52 in alabama about 300 miles away. A well equipted base here in clearwater that day worked ohio about 900 miles!

so before everybody yells and hollers about "talking ham"..."skip" conditions exist daily on Amatuer Radio low bands! And you can use a wire antenna to do talk, which is just as affective as any store bought. As Bruce states, "tropo" happens occasionally and is very cool to work. Guys, seriously, I know lots of you don't want to become Hams and that's fine....but go to a Ham friends house and check out 20, 40, 80 and 160 meters. There are jerks available on all frequencies, but there are more good people, who just love radio.
