Anybody using one of these on 11 meters. I was looking into a top of the line radio that is very clean on SSB but I dont know which of these units would best suit my needs. Any opinions or in-sight on which way to go would be applied well.

I have used a Yaesu FT847, FT100D, Icom 706 MKIIG on 11 meter and SSB worked great AM was BLA (IMHO)
Never used a Kenwood but keep watching my next purchase is a Kenwood TS2000  and i will let you know.

Most of the guys in my area use Icom and Kenwoods. The pure audio bunch all seem to stick with Kenwoods.

Another vote for the FT-100D here if you want a nice mobile all band rig. To make AM sound good you need to install the optional AM filter...makes a world of difference.
I've heard a few Kenwood TS-50's out there and they sounded good and are probably getting cheap. Older radio, but money saved. |

A few in my area have FT-1000Ds with the right mics they sound real nice on AM. They're not screaming loud but very rich sounding. One guy has a FT-102 which can really scream on AM. Another has a Kenwood TS-440 which works good on AM, it doesn't scream either, but has a nice rich sound when run with the right mic.
All those radios work excellent on sideband as far as audio quality, and frequency stability.
I just bought a Kenwood TS-940. Right now it only has the stock mic wired to it so the audio is kind of limited, but I'm going to experiment with using some audio processing and a regular unidirectional mic on it. |

Hey Moderator558. I've had a Ts-2000 for about 5 months now it is great! The noise blankers and filters let you pull out the weak stations out of the mud. It was a little more money then I wanted to spend but worth every penny!! |

i use a kenwood ts 430 as a base and a alinco 70t as a mobile. they sound supperb on ssb and fm. they are ok on am as they were not made for am really. not the same audio as a galaxy but they still sound good. if you want to modify them look at www.qrz.com then click on radio mods and pick the type of radio you want to know about then pick the model number. hey good luck. |

Most ham radios like kenwood yaesu and icom seem to sound tinny and no bass on am at 11 meters. |

You can't run cheapo CB mics on them. Everybody I have talked to said the audio was outstanding. Using a D-104 and stock mics |

I had a Icom 735 that was one heck of a mean talking you-know-what on SSB loved it for SSB but it was absolutely WORTHLESS on AM!!!!! I ran it with the matching SM 8 desk mike and still no diff on AM still sucky... |

I use a FT-847 on LSB,great rig. It does not like AM though. If you are looking to use a rig on AM and SSB and do not want to spend a lot of money,the Yaesu 101e or 101ee are great on both sides of the spectrum. You can get a good used Yaesu 101 for $300-$400.

If your going to talk on the cb band, the cbs are the best bang for the buck. If you buy an expensive Yaesu or Kenwood, your paying alot of money for things you don't need or won't use. Your paying for all the extra electronics involved in it being used for such a huge frequency range. Cbs, being specialized, usually work better for the band. I put my FT 920 against my HR 2510 and I could actually hear a little better with the 2510 I'm sad to say. I was kind of disapointed. |

Kenwood TS-850SAT is the mother for 11 meters...I have a Yaesu FT-847 and a Yaesu FT-1000MP and the TS-850SAT will run rings around them both.

Taz....which rigs are you specifically talking about on AM? I've had just about every CB ever made (with certain vintage exceptions) and had many a Ham rig. I've talked 80 meter am (most am I ever do) and have used Kenwood TS-180, 430, 850, 870 (the best imo) and 940 (current rig). Yaesu I've used FT-840, 890, 920 amd 1000MP. Never had any ICOM's. If you're compairing any of these rigs to what your statement reflects...please! I think not. And that's my opinion, but I disagree that ANY CB sounds as good as the above rigs mentioned on any mode. What about other ops? Anybody else? |

I'm talking about recieve. From what I've been told, Cbs use crystal filters. Only NEW ham rigs that has anything like them is the icom pro 2 that has a selection that mimics a crystal filter. The selectivity on the yaesu's and icoms I've used were awefull on am. If you are a cber, why would you waste all your money on a bunch of options you would never use? To me that is like someone with an aprartment buying a toothbrush that comes with a backhoe. I am probably wrong as far as teh crystals thing, I honestly don't know yet. Still, if I was a cbers, I would buy a cb and not a radio that has channels I can't tx on anyways just to be a showoff. |

fdirsh, If your just wanting 11 meters...Get a Lincoln and a Turner +3 desk mic. Very stable on SSB and rivals a Kenwood,Yaesu etc. on sound quality. |

I agree that the Lincoln/2510 sounds as good as or better than most 80-10 ham rigs on SSB and AM. A radio like the 847 or the kenwood ts-2000 is a good choice for someone like me, tech ticket no code, but likes 11 meter ssb, and I have 2 meter, 440 and 6 meters to play with in one radio. (847) But for running with the local CB AM operators, I like the Galaxy 2517 with the Astatic Supersidebander mic. It kicks the Yeasu in the butt. Bottom line is that if you are into the radio hobby, you will need more than one radio!!!! I'm into swl/scanning, too, so it's crazy over here with radios and antennas. |
