The Astroplane has better bandwidth. The Starduster is lighter and simpler to assemble. They both have the same theoretical gain, but the Astroplane will have slightly higher gain on the horizon when mounted at lower levels above ground.

I had a italian version up on the camper at the lake but i never used it enough to really get an opion of the thing. I guess it worked ok for what i used it for.. Talking to a few guys in their boats on the lake and to talk to a few locals!

Astroplane by far. I think the astroplane set the standards in omnis today.

Astroplane, I had one up year's ago and it did a great job for me. I also had a Starduster but I did not care for it, just my experience with these two antennas!

I am going to ask again, how does this old antenna, the Astro Plane ground plane work, electricaly?

Is it a 5/8 wave or what?

Are the new knockoff's exactally the same or very similar to the originals?

Is the Astro Plane in the Astro Beam the same as the AP ground plane?

Just today, I located an Astro Beam and I am going to try and get a look at it, maybe check it out.

How say you?

Hi Marconi,

The Astroplane is similar to an 'upside down' 1/2 wave gamma fed dipole. The exception being that the feed goes all the way to the end of the element like a folded dipole does. The top-hat just gets the current equalized at the mounting hub so that it is at voltage zero.

As far as I can tell, the Top One is exactly the same dimensions as the Astro Plane (with the exception of aluminum tubing diameter).

The omni Astroplane is not quite the same as the Astrobeam driven element. They are very close though.

I say have fun!
