A pointer if your a ham this does not apply

Florida law doen not permitt the installing of scanners in cars how ever if you are a ham or fireman or police officer it does not apply
I have a copy of the law when i worked for st pete a officer stopped a car and ticked the driver haveing it it was pluged into the lighter and mounted under the dash.... you cant do that unless your exsempt.

Check with your local city anyway they may not care

The 2000 Florida Statutes

Title XLVI - CRIMES
Chapter 843 - Obstructing Justice

843.16 Unlawful to install radio equipment using assigned frequency of state or law enforcement officers; definitions; exceptions; penalties.--

(1) No person, firm, or corporation shall install in any motor vehicle or business establishment, except an emergency vehicle or crime watch vehicle as herein defined or a place established by municipal, county, state, or federal authority for governmental purposes, any frequency modulation radio receiving equipment so adjusted or tuned as to receive messages or signals on frequencies assigned by the Federal Communications Commission to police or law enforcement officers of any city or county of the state or to the state or any of its agencies. Provided, nothing herein shall be construed to affect any radio station licensed by the Federal Communications System or to affect any recognized newspaper or news publication engaged in covering the news on a full-time basis or any alarm system contractor certified pursuant to part II of chapter 489, operating a central monitoring system

in short its illeagal for anyone to have a scanner in a car in florida unless your exsempt.

This is not just a Florida law but a Federal Law. Again there are exemptions but, make certain you are perfectly legal. The state police in other states have been known to take the unit and jail the owner.
The law states " No scanners in a mobile be it car, truck.etc.
I have three reasons to have one but I had to appear in court to show the Judge before I got the unit back and an appoligy.

Bruce,

I have spoke with many local officers about this - they said they only time the sheriff's dept or local PDs around here will give you any kind of hard time about having a scanner in your vehicle in any way shape or form is if you are "cop-chasing" and doing the typical rubber-neck/lookie-lou thing by running to the scene of incidents/crimes.. I was actually stopped before with it installed in my previous vehicle, the officer actually sat there and chatted with me a while because i had literally every talk-group for their agency programmed, that and he had never seen a 780xlt before and was fascinated by all the features/functions..

So, since I only use it to listen because I an nosier than hell about what is going on in my neighborhood, and have yet to ever scramble to a scene, I am pretty safe. I appreciate the info though!

EXACTLY what i said the law is clear you are not allowed HOWEVER im willing to bet if you dont do anything stupid they will not care. Here at the sheriff office i work at no one cares if you have it the law was wrote for amblance chasers and if your not one no now i know would even give it a thought. It might be a good idea to see what the policy is of your local S.O. give them a call all they can do is tell you they will inforce the law ...... i doubt that its a wast of time.

JWhipple,

I know what your getting at, atleast about the pictures. About a month ago, when I decided to install a radio, I searched for pictures of installs and antenna locations with no luck. Maybe the gentlemen here should post some examples of their installations? I will post mine, but I have a truck and am by no means in their level of experience

I found some mounting hardware, same type that is used in police car installations, was only $35 plus shipping and holds 3 radios.. I'm gonna run with that unless someone can present a better idea..

If i'm not mistaken the Lumina has a flat floor. Have you considered a "slip-seat" mount. Copper sells them. You could mount CB, Scanner, speakers and have one power lead for both.
Take a look at them. You might consider plastic.

I checked and cannot find a matching federal law so it is a FLORIDA problem now the mounts being used in my department cars is complex not only holds the radios but our main shop is installing laptop computers. Most will be going digital encoded over the next 10 years but not all you'll have plenty to lissen too. The jail here is on UHF infact ill be moving the repeaters next month. With all keep in mind that the law IS there chances are you'll not incounter a cop who had a bad night.

I custom made an insert for my 95 Chevy Silverado pickup. It is floor mounted. I will try and post a picture to at least give you another idea. It may be the farthest from what you are looking for but it is different and might spur additional ideas for those interested.

Shareing a mounting idea, I have a Nissan Pathfinder, try to mount a radio there, I decided to attache it to the back of the center concel, like in the back faceing the front, works great, in time your fingers know where to go and it looks good.the kicker in the back behind the tire, no leads showing at all.

About the illegal mobil scanners. I checked about a year ago and could not find any federal law concerning them, except the ones that receive cell phones. At that time there were 6 states and The District of Columbia that had laws against mobil scanners. They are New York, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Minnesota. Some larger cities also have their own laws. Like I said, this was a year ago, could be more now. scrapiron

Ironmask,

Actually this is the lumina CAR, not the lumina van.. It has a transmission hump... Check this link, it will work perfectly for me - I'll put my VR9000 in it, my BC780XLT, and my TRC-485, should work nicely once I rig up some spacers to take up the extra space between the side of the mount and the radios that are smaller than my VR9000.

http://www.galls.com/shop/viewProductDetail.jsp?item=VE112

I am actually purchasing this item from HTTP://WWW.SIRENNET.COM , but the Galls.com address shows it with gear installed on it, the Sirennet one doesn't. Also, Sirennet's prices are slightly lower than Galls, as are their shipping rates.

Who knows, maybe this info will be helpful to some others who were out of ideas like I was!

Bruce,

Theirs a quite a bit different.. The mount that I ordered is much like that which we used when I was an officer in L.A. in our patrol cars.. Minus that HUGE ugly MDT we used to use (thing was about the size of a TRS80 Model 3/4!!).. I am using a Wilson 1000 trunk lip mount, with an AS100 switcher. I never use both radios at the same time, I just like having one radio that sounds really good, and one that sounds "stock" to use with any alter-egos i cook up - that way nobody can recognize the sound of the radio.. For the scanner, I have a trunk lip mount (motorola style connection) with a 3" black 800 MHz antenna. I have considered moving that scanner antenna to a perm. roof mount, but I am not sure yet that I want to drill a hole in the roof.

we still use MDT's but are phasing them out the only question anyone here had were you tring to make it look like the old REACT cars where they tried to imatate our protrol cars. Otherwise no one will care I also use the motorola style mounts except for my 10 meter 1/4 wave thats a hussler mount. I also have used the AS100 switcher but now i mainly run my rspy-485 and my alinco dr-140 and a MFJ 6 meter fm set. Ill try this weekend to post a photo of the 5000 lbs rolling radio shack!

Bruce,

My simple goal is to make it look clean and professional, not like your typical redneck mobile around here with wires all over the place, 50 holes under the dash where the radios were installed over the years, and to keep the gear out of the deployment zones for the airbags. I also want everything easily within reach/view so if I do want to change something, I do not put myself, or any other motorist for that matter, in danger - as your typical "I can drive while talking on my cell phone while curling my hair, putting on lipstick, and shifting gears" drivers do out on the road today.

It is simple coincidence that 1 or 2 agencies in this county use the 96-98 Chevy Lumina (same body style as the 2001)for their detectives - the same car that I have. I bought the car because I like the styling and how it drives/rides - not to mention I feel like I have something solid around me in the event of a crash, instead of your typical tin can of a car that most cars have become these days.

To make matters one step better for myself, I have called one of the local testing sites and stopped putting off the inevitable - I have scheduled my no-code tech test - SO, if I do install my scanner in the car after that point, it WILL be legal, and I *WILL* carry a printed copy of the Florida statute pertaining to carry/install of scanners in vehicles so if an officer who wants to have fun with someone because they are having a bad night or had a fight with the wife before their shift, I can show them that I am legal and within my right to have it installed.. For now, once the mounting hardware arrives, I will put my linear in the stack where the scanner would have been going. At least then I can keep it cool by aiming one of the A/C vents towards the heat sink which is top-facing, and the linear will be on the TOP of the stack.

Good show on passing test and carring a copy of that law my opinion always has been like the c-phone law its a stupid one.... now to hook up with you on your new ham radio.
Most departments here are going encoded anyway for anything they dont want you to hear using computer links. But ill bet they will never replace voice..... not in my lifetime

Brevard county is still running EDACS analog mode... Anyhow, come the end of the year, the Uniden 785/285 digital scanners will be out.My way of thinking is, if they can decode the APCO25 systems that motorola has out, it will only be a matter of time that someone will develope a decoder board for EDACS digital as well as other schemes of digital trunking. From my knowledge, Brevard county has no intentions of switching to digital, at least for law enforcement, in the near future. They have just completed testing on a 4th tower in the area, and are now working on a 5th one.. Would seem kinda silly to put up 2 new towers for a system they are gonna scrap, but then again, sometimes government agencies do things that we will never quite understand!

Okay, let's try this again. First attempt was too large.

Here is a picture of my custom console in my 95 Silverado. Here are the details:

I made this to hold a President Lincoln on top (where the small radio resides in this picture). Below that is a small door that opens which is designed for amps, or higher power ham radios (detached from the face plate) where the heat would be.
Hidden inside the console are brass power distribution blocks with 8 gauge wire running straight to the battery. From there power is supplied to the radio, amplifier, and fans.
There are dual 12V 3 1/2 inch cooling fans, one on each side. The red on/off switch is visible on the upper left side of the face plate. The passenger side fan draws in air, the drivers side blows air, which basically creates a one way (from right to left) solid crossflow of air over the amp. Additionally, the center floor blower is directed into the back cutout. Screens keep anything from entering the fan blades.

It was not an easy project, and must be fully assembled inside the vehicle, but it is basically immobile with zero sliding or tipping due to the bottom "legs" completely contoured to the floor hump and the top so close to the dash.
An external speaker completes the setup.

Maybe this will give someone an idea.

Alsworld, your like me, haven't got that picture loading figured out. However, I can put them in my profile, and I just did one, this is how to mount a radio and amp in that silverado, its how I have mine, whats a few holes in the dash amoung friends. ha, I like it up there where I can see it. Note the 'plumber's strap' bracket on the old 667.

Sorry if this post through twice, forummaster please only let this one come through if possible, the 3rd URL in the first one was hosed.

Ok, I finally got everything setup.. Pics can be found here:

For the radios,

http://24.73.98.119:8081/radios.jpg

From bottom to top, we have my Voyage VR-9000, my Uniden BC780XLT Scanner, and an old but reliable TRC-485 Radio Shack radio.. Under the mount is hidden a Motorola external speaker, and my AS-100 switcher. Behind the radios on the hump is my Boomer 250. On the left side of the radios is my D104-M6B and on the right my trusty(?) Radio Shack stock mic...

And for views of the antennas,

http://24.73.98.119:8081/ants1.jpg

and

http://24.73.98.119:8081/ants2.jpg

On the roof is a 3 inch 800mhz antenna (now drilled through the roof - was a mag mount when this was taken), and on the trunk my Wilson 1000 and Radio Shack "All-band" scanner/2m/440 mag mount.

If the pics don't show, hit refresh a time or two, as I may be downloading or playing Battlefield 1942 online :)
