Finally made my decision. I'm packing up the Melaka and the DX55 and I'm going to start hunting around. I am hoping to find either a Cobra 2000 and a 148 to use or a PRESIDENT Madison and a PRESIDENT Grant. Just have gotten nostalgic for the old days when I used to sit with my dad and watch him talk on his old equipment. The new stuff probably works as good or better but it just is'nt the same. If I could find an old Maco 300 the KLV 1000 is getting boxed up too. I am accepting donations to fund this project. :);)

Hello
I know were there is a madison base that is bare stock with no mods.
The guy has it in his shop and would let it go pretty cheap.

A Maco 300, eh?

So you're nostalgic for the old days of bleeding into everything but the toaster oven, $90.00 tubes that go "POP" if you get a little long-winded, filter capacitors that explode when they get 15 years old.

If you really get the old Maco to hold together, (yes it CAN be done) I predict you'll remember what you liked about the KLV, and how economical it was to operate, in comparison.

Just my own two cents' worth.

The radios come off looking better than that, in comparison. Just remember, it's not just the years, it's the miles. Around the 20-year mark, small electrolytic capacitors in the solid-state stuff will begin to fail. At least they are smaller and cheaper than the ones in the Maco. A radio with 'low miles' will usually provide better service than one that ran 24/7 for 10 or 15 years.

Oh, and the "President" radios all say "Uniden" on the inside. The Uniden name on the outside just means it's less than 10 or 12 years old. Same factory, different year.

I digress but my now deceased uncle ran a president madison continuously for well over 20 years.. He never turned it off once! But the maco would make an excellent boat anchor id say. The KLV 1000 would definetly be the better choise IMHO the tubes are a LOT cheaper and better than the tubes that are in the maco. I know a lot of guys that run the old macos and D&As but i dont put them down because of what they run or lecture them about how awful their stuff is. I feel if a guy wants to run a amp that bleeds or a radio thats over 20 years old hey, thats super, it whatever they want to run i say!

I will be a lot happier just to be back with a CB that does'nt look like a band could use it for a mixing board. Not putting the new stuff down just looking to get back to basics of radio I guess.I learned what a CB was with an old Teaberry Dad had. When he got his Madison I thought it was the greatest thing in the world along with a friend of his 2000 I was in CB heaven for a 12 or 13 year old kid. Then I wanted to get fancier so my youngest brother got the "old" stuff. Now as soon as I can sell the new,not bad, equipment I will have what I had in the first place and just did'nt realize I wanted it. Ain't that the way it always goes. Don't know what you've got till it's gone I reckon. I may keep the KLV though. I can't use it right because of neighbors with TV antennas but a 250 might not hurt.

Hey 2600 mind if i ask why you go by 2600? Do you run a uniden HR 2600 is that why you use that handle? Just curious thats all. If so the 2600 is a great radio! I run one and like it. yes it has its quirks but i overlook them.

Im with you i love OLD cb stuff like the HE-15 my dad got that hooked me forever into ham radio yes nice old stuff not much by todays standards but fun to think of. The HE-15 had a very poor reciver one stage at 1750 so i dreamed up a sceam there was room to punch out the chassies and out in another K-tran. Well someone sold me in 63 a HE-15 for just a few bucks so noe i had one i could tear into. Over the next few years i revamped its reciver. the triode mixer was replaced with a pentogrid one and the added k-tran was 50 khz! well now we went from 4 ch wide to about one. and reciver sens was 5UV for 50 MW at the speaker was noe less than ONE. NEXT conversion for the 15 was to 6 meters a nuvista 6cw4 ground grid rf stage into a 6u8 mixer in a small bud box bolted where the crystal tray was that i removed to fit it in now it was triple conversion 27 first if 1750 2nd if and one can at 50 khz. The transmitter was easy i rewound the coils to 50 meg. I used that thing into the early 70's then it died and i had much better radios any way. I had packed dads away in a box it would not see day light for more than 30 years. Then 3 years ago took it out and restored it to working condition and it still does now its 40 years old. Yep old school radios you could even fixem in thoes day!

Heres an old school CB radio although it is AM only. The old Robyn T 240D(the funny looking yellow one) tuber type 40 channel.
They always sounded so cool with that warm, rich, make you feel all fuzzy and nice, tube audio!

IMHO....

'scuse me...but, ummm...I found the KLV250 to be just as bloody as any older tube amp. The Maco was not alone in its propensity to wipe out TVs. My old Skipper 300 ChromeDome was nasty as well, and so was the DA Phantom. My old Boomerang 250(very similar in construction to the KLV, but from the 1978-1980 era) was notorious for pegging the TV, my stereo, the neighborhood cable system, etc. Any sweep tube or even good "transmitting" tube amp with less than phenomenal amounts of filtering will generate TVI.

I like the KLV series. They are nice little amps for the money and sound good on the air, but lets not fool ourselves here...ANY so called "25-30Mhz" amp, tube or solid state, will cause massive TVI without an appropriate lowpass filter inline and careful placement of antenna and ground system.

The only way to sort of get around this is to graduate to the higher end amateur amps, and any ham will tell you, even those will blow the TV outta the water if not properly used.

TVI is a problem with the receivers, not the transmitters in most cases.

This is why, for the time being, I am enjoying the wonders of "barefoot" operation. I've worked ALL of the American countries, North, Central and South, plus Australia, most of the Caribbean and Antilles, plus some western European countries and Portugal with 25w PEP and a dipole.

OK After looking at some of these posts I can honestly say that, for me, some of these go beyond old school and begin to approach historical significance.:):):) But I'm still going as back as far as getting my Cobra 2000 and a 148 F GTL. Gotta have my frequency counters.

I'm useing a Cobra 139XLR,deadkeying 5 watts, swinging between 15 an 21 watts. Until recently, it was driving an old Palomar 300A Amplifier until the transformer decided it was time to retire. Talk about old, original equipment, the Base Unit is old, the Amplifier is old and i,m twice as old (60).I guess i'm lucky the old Base is still working however,i had never been able to stop bleeding into everything electrical within several blocks of my House useing the old Palomar, even after filtering-Grounding an any other suggestions from friends an Forums. But, after purchasing a KLV 350,i have'nt had any complaints from any neighbors. So, my conclusion is, that old without a warranty is good, but new with a warranty is much better.--73's

I agree Bullseye, I'm looking for a clean non-hacked Washington. Solid radio, I wish I had of known that they were to be discontinued....I would have bought one last year. I guess used is the only option and I don't really want to go the E-bay route. Buying a used radio from a stranger with out checking it out is an invitation for trouble I think. I've contacted a lot of dealers in hopes of finding new old stock but no luck. They made lots of them and I will find one sooner or later. SB #106

It's a sad comentary that dealers on e-bay who are getting much to much anyway are not being held to the high standards that e-bay would like you to beleve. My opinon is if a radio is sold without warrntee it shold be sold as non working. Now i have see a few dealers which did offer a short return option and i even would not have a problem if the dealers had a sticker to prevent access to the radio ( like ranger is doing ) you broke it you bought it thats fair.I have almost stoped dealing on e-bay ive been burned too many times..... kinda feel if i cant buy it from a dealer like copper i dont need it.

Yes , I have to agree with you Bullseye, new radios are nice but its fun to cycle old radios thru the shack every now and then. I have had CBs since '73 and fortunately, I have kept every one (thats why there are no cars in my garage).

I also am a lover of older equipment, from Mics to Radios.

I have a good size collection of the Washington Bases both the President and Uniden Series. Even lucky enough to have a couple of them still New in the box.

I also collect Old Mics, Turners both Desk & Hand mics as well as all of the Astatics and lucky enough to have two MINT Condition Astatic DN-50's.

I still love the OLDER Equipment and also like the Newer Equipment.

I guess I am kinda like Dan, When I get a radio in that works and sounds good I always find a place for it somewhere, hate to see them leave.

As for e-bay guess I have been lucky as only been burned 1 time and that was solved out without any problems.

Just my thought's

Those 882's are great radios to play with. Just remember...the "Delta Tune" control is just fluff, so it lends itself nicely to "other" uses. ;-) CB/PA is handy too!

Quick shot with 100MW (.1W ) ive worked into ohio from florida and moble on 10 meters i offen work the west coast with 4 watts on 29.6. On 6 meters ive worked into new york with LESS than 100MW and south america with 30MW also on 6. On 2 and 1 1/4 meters Ga with one watt ( 250 miles ) and on 440 mhz missippi with 2 watts on 446.00 yep it can be done BUT the record is the voiager space craft last i heard 146,642,400,000,000 miles and it runs 5 watts os its getting 29,328,480,000,000 miles per watt!

According to the NASA website, Voyager uses 20 watts of transmit power and the earth station that sends up commands uses 20KW.

The info i had is 5 but even so 20 watts is 6,000,000,000,000 per watt! As for commands still you are HEARING the 20. The record here in florida is on 1296 mhz it's 2,000,000 miles per watt. and on 49.86 ive heard kiddy walkies fron the north about 1200 miles away when the band is open ( they run about 40 MW ) SK K2GB worked from his home in New York City Canada and GA on 145 mhz running 200 MW and was consintly heard 100 miles away.... it can be done. Back in the 70's i had a GW-7 and worked 80 meter cw with it it ran a few watts i worked as far as Tex and canada but many have worked the world. England has been worked with 100 MW on CW and on 10 meters ive worked germany MOBLE on 29.6 fm with 4 watts ( i turned the amp off since he was HARD LIMIT) and was +60 over 9 in fact he went down to ONE WATT and still had half the bars lit on my meter. It would be VERY intresting if for ONE day all amps on cb were turned off to see the drop in noise.
