Wm Pokora, On this question you will get many suggestions. Then you forgot to mention BASE or MOBILE. Then ANTENNA's come in to play. A good Antenna can make even the smallest / cheapest radio sond good. Then you have to know what kind of modifications you are going to do to Radio. Super Swing, Power Mic, Peaked & Tuned, Pre-Amps, Modulation Modifications, Echo Boards & Many more. Then you have to remember what sounds good to one person does not sound good to another. Personally I like Ranger 2970DX, Voyage VR9000, HR2510, Uniden, for Mobiles, Bases I like Teaberry Stalker 202, Ranger 2995 DX, Texas Ranger 696F SSB, President & Uniden WASHINGTON's, You should be reading post's on this question for the next year or so. But that is what makes this FORUM FUN! Lon tech808 |

bah, i have had both 200 and washington and on am the 2000 is the better preformer and on ssb washigton is the shiz!! i mean an am it is close but for ssb their is no comparison. but the best? they might have been 15 years ago but times have changed my freinds! a good president 2510/lincoln will talk with the big boys.. i.e. kenwoods, yeasu, icom,s and alinco.. on the ten meter they always think i am running a big dog.lol rangers are close but just to not have the same quality of audio. well just an opinion from the sticks... 123 upper michigan |

How about a Ranger AR 3500 or a 3300? I have the 100 watter of the 3500 and it is the cats A&& on SSB and AM is ok but it has a little too much receive audio for my taste.. |

allright the best talking one i have ever heard cb? not doing channels or nothing... the best talker was a cobra 139xlr with new finals and a new modulation tranformer. it was wired to a slitronix 90 vfo and this old radio done right holds good competition with all the export big boys.. 123 upper michigan |

come on boys and girls the best is still the old tube type radios but they are collectors not to many in use any more like my Tram D-201 or my D201a,put alittle power behind these or not and talk about anywhere if conditions are rolling. Oh I do have the power, browing 180,maverick 250 and so on...ha!ha! Have fun and keep talking.73's the midnight(244) |

Midnight The same thing is said about 23 vers 40 ch radios the fact is a well designed solid state radio is far better that tube ones. Tubes due have some advantages as far as overload but " Talkpower" wise the new 40's if they gave them any thought at all are far better. I run a unmodified titan on 10 meters and corectly tuned it sounds as good as anything on the air. For almost 20 years i ran a 75A2 and HT-37 nice but as big as a house but even my alinco dx-70 walks circles around them and it is 1/20 the size. I know everyone would like to beleve the FCC wanted to cut down on modulation with limiters but thats not true. The problem is how well the limiters work and how much cost and efford the manufacture put into the set. Tubes are dead even though a few audio nits are tring to revive them they are in rigor morits and may hang around but will never come back. Not that some older sets are nice your is but lots of newer ones are too just like lots of older ones were and are junk. |

For a strictly stock CB. The Browning Golden Eagle is tops. What it could do with Tubes versus todays transistor units is still respected today for overall performance. My second favorite is a rare unheard of International Crystal 100. I wish I'd have kept it. |

I have not heard any louder radios than a properly modded Cobra 148/2000. There are a lot of killer exports but they fall short of the 148/2000s heavy audio. The Connex 4800 is the loudest Export I've heard.....The Delta Force is great too. |

My DX2517,and a very small part of the band switch is 10-meters,primarily 11-meters and this rig is LOUD and CLEAR on the other end,it sounds like those am stations that run 125%positive modulation,it's just uncanny,it must have one helluva audio amp. |

Finally decided to chime in one this and I must agree that the Cobra 148 GTL is a sweet little radio. Got mine back from 307 and this rig cooks. No complaints and nothing but great reports on the audio. Old Cobras with Uniden boards have got the best audio,... that's why I bought this one. It was used but looked like a champ,...a diamond in the rough. XLAXX |

Any older Cobras before 1996 are my faves!! I love the audio! I often woner how much money Cobra lost when they started the sound trakker deal and just about everyone walked away? One guy i know that runs a CB shop bought 5 new cobra 148 GTL ST back in 1997 and every one of them was retuned in 2 monthst and the onwers got galaxys. |

Mr RF I just bought the cobra 75wx now it seems because i have little choice of what will fit in the small car im driving to work well. Question i cant see any change with the "soundtracker " it seems only to distort strong stations... since you dont seem impressed with these radios whats the scoop on this ??? is it a form of DSP or just more BU**? Bruce |

Bruce, you mean to address ur previous to CM 3885? I have no idea about the soundtracker stuff. It does appear to be DSP based from their adds but I suspect it would be hard pressed to match the performance of the DSP-599zx that I use. Anyway I have always been impressed with the GE Superbases...never heard one waiver below "excellent" in the TX mod department. I have heard some marked differences in TX mod of some Cobra radios. Guess I just like Superbases! Mr_RF by-the-way...whatever happened to plate modulated transmitter technology! Some of these "Psuedo AM" modulated radios sound lously!!! Ahhhh, the days of RCA and Harris XMTRs running plate modulated 4-1000 pairs for RF and Aural. Ole Archie Bunker never sang it better...those were the days! |

They have a new life between 29.0 - 29.2 Nothing like class b plate modulated with screen taps on the modulation transformer .... negitive feedback and REAL negitive peak cliping! |

Mr RF Back in my younger crazy days in the 60's I built a plate modulated 829b 2 meter transmitter. The nicest sight i can think of is when that 829 was being driven right and modulated at 100% you could see the white hot grid through the red hot plate ... with that nice blue glow that twinkled as you talked! |

Bruce, right now I am missing my broadcast days! glowing tubes, fryed squirrel in loading coils, stuck antenna amp meters in doghouse, water in the burried hardline! mmmmmmmm ahhhhhhh No, wait, what's wrong with me...being woke up in the middle of the night cause the DJ forgot to wait for the filaments to warm up, yearly Proofs, Once-a-week logbook duty, tower lights...NAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I don't really miss it. What was I thinking about! lol |

You guys ever put a mod kit in a old cobra 29 ltd classic? Barefoot I got mine to dead a half watt and swing to 25 and running a little fire to the wire, I got it to dead key 20 and swing to 650. Probably why my neighbor hates me now so I've shelled out some cash in filters but oh well, all fair in love and war........i mean cb's. |

I've expressed in other areas of this forum that the Cobra 2000GTL I had was the best audio I'd ever witnessed. I've also talked about how much I regret having "ants in my pants" and selling it about 10 years ago. Well, wishing I never sold it the most sickening thing happened. I'm using my friend's GrantXL and get a radio check from this guy about 15 miles away. Ends up he's the third owner of what was MY RADIO! He sounded so good it made me sick. He seemed a pretty good guy but it made me think of an intolerable scenario: imagine selling a killer radio only to have it come back and pummel you with abuse, splash, etc;.. Radio's and motorcycles.. always get bored at the sight of what you've got, sell them, and then appreciate what you had "years ago..". Aint that the story with everything in life... |
