OK I wanted to get another battery to add to my vehicle. Something close to the amp. Any suggestions.
I've heard of an 8-D, Or a 1000 CCA, but I was thinking of maybe 2 of the 6 volt batt.s. Can you cross them out to get 12 volts some how or can you cross out 3-6volts for 18. If so would they stay charged at that since the alt. only puts out 13.8
Any suggestions????

fdirsh,

You can add six volt batteries in series. By series I mean positive to negative. You could add as many as you choose. Multiply the number of batteries times 6 this would give you the final voltage. By using two 6 volt in series you will get 12 volts and more amperage capacity. With the alternator putting out 13.8 volts they will be fully charged. I suggust using 00 battery cables for the jumpers between batteries. Use 8 ga. from the positive of battery 1. and the negative from battery 2.

Buy a 5000 cca diesel truck battery about 150 lbs.and still can use standard alt.,if mounted in trunk use 00 or 000 cable, good luck.

Hey Ironmask I think ohm's law fits in there some where, say you got 2 1000 amp batts. in series you halve the amperage or 500 amps and this is true no matter what the voltage is.Each cell in the battery produces 2.2 volts no matter how thick or how many square inches it is,that changes the amperage, thus a 6-volt has 3 cells,a 12-volt has 6 cells, thats why I suggested a truck battery.I've seen em 50000 amps but they weigh as much as a mid-size car,not very practical.

Be aware...
When adding a battery that will run off of the vehicle's alternator and will charge your new battery as well as your original, you need them to be like-kind. Similar cca, reserve, gravity, etc, or one will draw from the other.
Running 3-6's wouldn't be recommended as when you first hook them up the voltage will surge back to the stock system and may damage many things.
Running multiple 12s in series you'd better be very familiar or BOOM!
What type vehicle is it?

AS I said in a much earlier post, many autos will be 48 volt systems except for cranking;12 volts.Using a small converter for the radio and a 4-pill 1000 watt amp,we all should be burning up the airways, allRITE!!Wishful thinking aside have two batterys the same,as what's in the car.Unless your batt.is new buy two and start fresh, always have a quick disconnect between batts.Your main batt. will be connected to elec.system at all times, use disconnect when jump-starting to avoid frying other cars alt.,when your car starts wate 2 mins. then engage disconnect to avoid frying YOUR alt..Because more than one dead battery,is similar to briefly shorting the output to your alt.,bad bad bad.So in conclusion check out a plow dealer, unless you live where it don't snow, they got all the hook-ups and always match your batterys to your charging system and visa-versa.

Tech671 the vehicle is a Isuzu P'up 1992 model, 4 cylinder. Radio is a grant. Antenna is a 1.2K solorcon, ball mount thru roof,Mount is grounded to frame, and all connected to radio, amp, and cap. I put a 1.0 farad cap in line with a 2-1446 box and there is no change in the sound of the motor when I key but I want to put something between the 2-1446's and the antenna. Help?

Re tech 671...

Hmmm I never thought about the need for the same model of battery as being important. BUT it does make some sense. Sort of like having one bad cell in a battery discharging the remaining good cells.

>>I want to put something between the 2-1446's and the antenna.<<

Something like that is going to draw a good 80-90 amps, plus driver and radio and vehicle accessories. This equals at LEAST a 140a alternator.
Batteries or caps may support insufficient amperage to a degree in car stereo, but not with a rf transmitter!

Check out Powermaster, Powermaxx, etc for a 200a alt if you want to run a straight 6 with a driver and the rest of the car. Plan on $500+ in the new alt, and additional battery.
